Multi-band compression is not only frequency specific, but based on dynamics. If the mix suffers from occasional sibilance or bass frequencies that come and go in level, a multi-band compressor might be a better tool than an EQ to remove it (or to automate an EQ). If the mix is consistently unbalanced at certain frequencies, EQ would be a better solution.
