I would really like to get my home studio up and running by purchasing a multi-imput sound card... 12 ins or more would be ideal, and I'd like it to be accessible, and reasonably priced (about $500 or less??). Am I in fantasy land?? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

I too am trying to decide on a multi track sound card. There's a lot of 2, 4, and 8 input units. I am looking for an 8 track card.
Your options are the MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) 1296, 2 8 track cards, or theres a 16 track unit by DigiDesign. I don't know which one is the best, I've been trying to get advice on that as well. Any way, $500 is fantasy land. Look to spend twice that at least.

CupidCult, when do you need to record twelve separate sources simultaneously? If you can "settle" for 8 I/O, check out the DSP24 with ADC/DAC2000 breakout box. It's US$360 here or if you're in an EC country, get it from here. The converters have gotten good reviews but the two mic preamps are pretty much crap. Also, you can stack up to four of these setups in one computer, giving you 32 simultaneous I/O. All you'd need then is a computer from fantasy land to handle the throughput...

Good luck

Ola, yep... I think I can settle...that ADC/DAC is exactly what I'm looking for, and at a fabulous price! Thank you for the info and link! :)

Now is that DSP a quality unit? $360 seems too good to be true. Has anyone ever used this? If it turns out to be a good card, I'll be all over that!!

I have it and am very satisfied. I think a few others here have it as well. The preamps are not top quality but the converters are really good. Sure, they're not Apogee but at 1/50 of the price, what can you expect. It's gotten good reviews in the few tests I've seen so far.

I will probably sell it soon and get the DSP24 MKII and the ADCIII rack box instead. Not because I'm unsatisfied with the quality but the new setup will give me 8 ins with phantom power and apparently good preamps and two outs to feed the monitors, which is all I need. All at 24/96. 8 outs are too many for me.

Also, keep in mind that sales tax and perhaps import tax will most probably be added. It's still cheaper than going to my local store. Sad in one way.

re: Motu

reco, how pricy is pricy? In the meantime, I'll check it out.

I'm in the exact same position as you cupid - I had just landed on the Yamaha DSP2416 when I saw an earlier post describing it as the DSP2416 Mk2. This has thrown me, as I've not seen it labelled Mk2 in any stores; do I need to be extra careful here (what's the diff between the Mk2 and the vanilla DSP2416 anyway?).

Basically, having looked all over, my conclusion is that, if you record only 1 track at a time (I do) then the DSP2416 has gotta be the best buy... PROVIDING you've got software that can access all its functions. Cubase 3.6 or higher DEFINITELY works with it, I don't know about other progs.

I think its in the $999.99 Range..........
But for 24 ins that realy good. it may be a little more Not sure though Im looking for the best price right now.
