Im looking for either an 8 input XLR or firewire soundcard on a budget.

I only have about $500 to spend!
Anyone have any suggestions please?

Eck

There´s plenty...

Presonus Firepod, Motu 8pre, Tascam 1082 (4 XLR only), Focusrite Saffire Pro...

Use the search function and you´ll find user reviews...
My humble opinion is that you should study the specs of each unit and make your desicion based on your necessities... You´ll find people loving and hating each one; i doesn´t matter.
Either way, pick anyone and you´ll be making music in a blink! :D

HTH.

If you already have some preamps or a mixer you could look at the alesis multimix firewire 8. It will record 8 channels simultaneously via firewire but only has 4 mic preamps. I recorded drums using xlr to jack for four of the mics on the channels without preamps and it worked well, it would need to be a loud source though.

Im on a tight budget though so Saffirs is definetly out the window although I would LOVE one!! I only have about $500 to spend.

I did a whole album as an experiment using just a used firepod. It got mastered by some heavyweights in the genre who had no complaints.

Working on a new one with the firestudio instead, just waiting on presonus for some fixes to that piece yet

Be hard to go wrong with the Firepod. The vast majority of the posts on this board about them are positive.

I was looking for an interface for a mobile rig a couple of weeks ago and after a lot of research I bought a Tascam FW-1804 instead of a Firepod. Pres weren't a concern as much as the 4 inserts on the 1804 (vs. 2 on the firepod), and the ability to expand to 16 channels with ADAT, plus it was a hundred and seventy bucks less. On the other hand, the firepod was pretty tempting because last week at least, American Musical was running a deal that had a firepod coming with free a Presonus 4 channel headphone amp and a Audio Technica AT-2020. I just didn't happen to need any of that stuff.

I have no experience with the firepod but i hear great things about it from everyone who uses it and seems to fit what you need perfectly. Defineatly check that out.
