Say Something Smart!
I'm looking for a multi-format DVD burner. One the burns DVD+/-RW. I'm currently looking at the Lite-On LDW-811S and Lite-On LDW-411S.

Does anyone have experiences with either of these drives, or another drive?
Keep in mind, I'd like it to be multi format, and no less than 4X. And I'd like to stay under $150.00 USD.
I'd be using it mainly to make backups of my system, and burn music CD's and some DVD's ocassionally.

Thanks!

you can't backup dvds "very legally" without certain software, because of copyright protection. most software you buy will NOT copy a dvd for you.

dvd-r = plays on most dvdplayers, one time burn only
dvd+r = sometimes cheaper, best for backing up for computers etc. - there's some reason to buy these but basically don't buy them. ha. don't play on all dvd players..or many. one time burn only.
dvd-rw =rewritable
dvd+rw =rewritable

best not to get a cheap and crapper dvd burner, the technology is new and you get what you pay for.
i'd aim for 200 bucks, esp. if you want a 4x.

Thanks shack.

I don't want to make backups of my DVD's, just some files on my system. And the 700MB won't really cut it, so I'd like to get the 4.7GB out of a DVD.

Thanks for the tips.

yep..no problem.
i use dvd-r media. plus should be fine too. try a search on yahoo like, "dvd-r vs. dvd+r" ha.

I've got an Omega Super DVD drive that's been working great for a few months. It was under $200 a few months ago so it should be lower by now. It also plays DVD RAM which is pretty rare for cheap drives.

If I were to by one, the Liteons would be my first choice. If you peal back the labels on a lot of other drives, you will find a LiteOn sticker under them.
