Multi effects processors vs. stomp boxes?

Also for those who play in church, there is another factor of time/space, both of which are very limited on most church stages. A single button press on a POD XT Live can change from acoustic 12 string sound to a heavy overdrive Les Paul sound.

I still use a DD3 - which 'works' in that it 'does delay'.
Sure, it mashes up the sound a bit - but it does the job.

if its good enough for The Edge...

I am even simpler than most. The only effects I even use are distortion and sometimes chorus.

So if it's already built into the amp, who needs a box?

If I want a certain effect on there, I usually just use plug-ins when I am mixing.

I don't play guitar live since I am a bassist, so all that stuff would be waste of money for me.

I guess that makes me the exception....

My home setup still involves my BOSS pedals and a Zoom 505.
Like The Karate Kid's sensei says "Wax On, Wax Off", thats what I do with the Boss pedals -- stomp on / stomp off

My setup is.
1. Boss Phaser -- same setting since I got it 25 years ago. It's what i like
2. Boss Flanger -- rarely use it, but nice for swooshy stuff
3. Boss Delay (analog) --- one setting, to sound like the delay in 2112. Works great for solos
4. Zoom 505 --- use Chorus, Distortions and Gain, with minimal reverb. Had it since 1996

My fave Chorus Pedal "Ibanez Stereo Chorus" died on me in 1999.
I prefer its warm sound over what Boss had at the time

Not setup
I have a noisy original Cry Baby. Haven't use it in 20 years.
I have a Boss DD3, but I like it better for vocals, not guitar.
I have a Boss Octaver, that I use sometimes.

LIVE, I use a 50 watt Marshall 2 channel (transistor model)
I've had it for 23 years. Hey, it's light.

I also, I want to replace the ZOOM 505 with something ?
I'm looking for something that excels in AMP Modeling and Distortions.
I plan to keep the Boss pedals.

My friend has an older multi-effects thing that we never really figured out how to use, and he kind of got sick of it and went with stomps. I can't say too much myself, but I feel that it's a lot easier to adjust the controls for each effect if they're all just sitting right there on the pedal. Kind of annoying to switch more than one at a time tho, so I try not to do that too much. I'm not very effect crazy, anyway.

I do sort of have a multi-effects stomp, tho, the Digitech Distortion Factory. Personally, it's the best distortion pedal I've ever used, especially since it's got it all in one pedal, but then again before I got my other effects I just used the distortion on my Crate amp (which I still like a lot, but there's no effects loop, so I needed a pedal). So yeah, I guess I'm just agreeing with people who say that it's all in what you want to play, but also in what you want to pay. With the Distortion Factory, I paid $100 and got every distortion pedal I could ever want. Seems like a good deal to me.

Maybe it's just me - but I fell in love with the thing. Try one, but beware - you may fall in love too ;)
Dammit! I knew I'd better be careful :( Its all too tempting...

I won't go into exactly what my setup is cos it is changing slowly over time but I am a definite fan of stomps..

I couldn't see it being easy use two different gain stages like I do (a tube driver into a big muff)...or having two of the same kind of effect just cos of the different sounds....... its one thing I really love about the single stomps...
is being able to mix and match each for its tone...

Now for my disclaimer: most people are probably not that concerned and if not that is fine too... I see there is definitely a place for multi's but whenever I have tried them it was not long before I was back to my single pedals...

I used both on my pedal board, a KORG toneworks, which I use for volume control/amp modeling (and I never change the setting), and two stomp boxes (DOD Grunge/ROSS Radio Phase), It's so much easier to hit a stomp box then deal with presets/writting presets. And having a few nice knobs infront for quick changes is perfect.

In the long run I prefer the simplicity of stompers. I have a nice multi effect unit with some killer effects like tape echo, phaser, tremolo, leslie, 3 great reverbs, and more. BUT, it cannot reproduce the real sound of a Germanium fuzz face or a Tube Screamer. The one quality I really really must have in my multi effect is stereo 'cause I play through two amps.

This is just me

For playing live I perfer peddles. Especially if I have to do a lot of switching off of effects during a song.

For studio work I will use a mulit-effect unit (PodXI or Digitech 4040)

I guess it is just what you need, what you've got, what your using it for and what makes you happy.

I own and have used Alesis and Boss multiFX. I also have lots of pedals, TS, Marshall and Boss distortions, a couple reverbs and chorus, and 5 pedals I built. The best setup I've found so far for me is guitar>>>cable>>>amp.

Hardly gives me that delay I love so much though :D

Each to his own of course!

*runs back to make sounds through the delay.... even non guitar sounds.
And no its not a tape echo for those concerned. :p

back to topic.. Duditz has a good point.... each to his own.. don't care what others like as much as what you have learned to like......
