Multi channel mixer used with a soundcard?

I have an EMU 0404 soundcard, and right now I am using a 2 channel mixer, one channel at a time.

If there is only 1 left and 1 right imput to the soundcard, how does a multi channel mixer (recording drums) hook up to the soundcard?

Are you talking about sending individual channels from the mixer to your sound card?

Usually Multi Channel mixers will plug into the computer without touching the sound card. There are FireWire mixers that can do this with fair ease such as the Phonic and Alesis boards.

You can do the same by plugging the main outs of your mixer into a FireWire interface.

Unless you are doing 1 Channel recordings mixers without Outputs for each channel or a firewire connection are usless unless you're aiming to merge your mix into stereo.

A better mixer will have direct outs.

The rest can use the channel inserts to fake a direct out.
