I'm thinking about buying a multi-band processor for mastering and was just wandering how many of you own one and could give me some opinions on what brands you like and ones to stay away from ect....

I'm looking to spend $500 or less if I can, but will spend more if it is worth it

Thanks, ----Mike

hi Mike,

I spent eight years in Ann Arbor, so as a "homeboy" let me give you some friendly advice: don't cross-post. it annoys people around here...

welcome to homerec!

Stay away from the Behringer Ultramizer. Completely useless pile of shite that will only succeed in making your mixes sound worse.

I haven't used many other multi-band compressors, except the multi-band patch in my Nord Modular, which sounded good. A second hand Micro Modular is within your price range. It's a cool box, but probably not the best multi-band compression you can find for that price.

First of all thank you for your replies. Second, littledog, thanks for the warning on cross posting I'll consider that, since this is the first time I've ever done it. But could you explain what the big deal is about that. (I'm not in any way trying to be an ass or anything) I am just curious. The logic behind why I did it is because the piece of gear I'm inquiring about would be a piece of rack gear. So I post here in 'the rack' forum. But on the other hand it is for mastering, so I post in 'mixing/mastering' forum. There most likely are a good number of people who read this forum and don't read the mixing/mastering forum or vice versa and there may be good info from either one. I'm just looking for as many opinions and suggestions as I can get before I decide to purchace a product. Like I said I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just wandering where the annoyance comes in to play.

Thanks again,
----------------------MIKE

It's just a convention around here. Most of the people who are most helpful and knowledgeable DO read all the recording-oriented forums. It's kind of annoying to try and keep track of a flow of discussion when it is divided amongst two or more rooms. You'll notice, I wasn't being hostile to you in the least - it's understandable that you wouldn't know the customs if you are new.

Were you a musician in Ann Arbor? I was hooked into the jazz scene there in the 1970's, but I understand a lot of the people I knew are still in the area: Ron Brooks, Paul Vornhagen, Bruce Dondero, Gary Schunk, Wendell Harrison... lots of others.

As a matter of amusement, one of the women I dated had a ten year old (at the time) son who has turned out to be quite a musician ... Ricky Roe.

littledog, got your point on crossposting, didn't think you were being hostile in the least, thanks. I've only been here in Ann Arbor for about 3 1/2 years now, originally from Saginaw. Some of those names I've heard before but haven't hit the jazz scene here yet. Been meaning to though. I'm in a metal band with some guys in the detroit area, but by no means am I bound by that style of music. I play guitar, keys, and alto sax so in my own time I write all types of music, from blues, to new age, to classical, to metal, ect.... Jazz is a tough one for me though as far as improvising over some of the tricky and fast chord changes you come across. But I guess thats why we practice.

Peace, Mike
