Multi-band compressor simulation?

I'm trying to mix some material with Sonic Foundry Vegas software, using home stereo as monitors, and finding that I cannot get the tightness or punchiness I want (short of going to a professional mastering house). Is there a way to simulate multiband compression? I'm thinking of something like chaining together eqs and compressors (software plugins). I guess I'm trying to do mastering without mastering gear (i know... big no no). Just trying to get the best result possible with what I've got.

If you can handle VST PlugIns...

Here you can find quite a lot of effects for free, including a multiband compressor, that is especially made to solve problems within the mastering process.
