mult track recording midi drums

I know that I can split a midi drum recording to multiple tracks after it has been recorded, but is there a way to record the output of a midi device (I have an Alesis Control Pad) directly to different tracks, perhaps by channel ? The Control Pad can output each pad on independent channels, but how can I set up a cubase midi track to record only from input on a single specified channel?

Thanks.

I'm not sure that I do want to do it, but I am curious to see if it can be done.

one good reason for doing this is so that individual velocity hits on the instruments in use can be varied to give it a more human feel. After all a real drummer hits the drums harder or softer throughout the piece. I use sonar 6 producer to do this and split all the instruments in the kit to differant tracks, then either throw a randomising cal at it or do it by mouse and intuition. Btw i am not a drummer but it helps my drum tracks sound less mechanical. hope this helps.

You don't have to split the midi to different tracks to do that though.

If I were to guess your wanting to do this because you want to see what midi note controls what and to give each track it's own name so you can see it better.

And that would make sense for every other DAW on the market, but cubase has this niffty feature called drum maps and the drum editor which are pretty much superior to every other DAWs (fucking shitty piano editors) when it comes to manipulating and seeing drum on/off midi notes.

However if you wanted to say send the kick to both superior and slate then I could see why your trying to do what your doing.

Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what is in your head with this so I can help more effectively.

My main goal is to be able to have separate tracks in the mixer for each kit component so I can mix drum volume levels the same way I mix other levels.

I know what notes are being sent, and I use drum maps. I also know that I can dissolve a midi part to separate tracks. I just wanted to know if the events generated by the different pads of the Alesis Control Pad could be recorded directly to separate tracks because it seems like it should be doable.

Ok now that we narrowed that down, are you using the alesis sounds or are you controlling a drum program via midi in cubase?

The Alesis Control Pad is controller only, no sounds. I can select the midi note, and channel that each pad sends out when struck. My plan is to use the Control Pad (via usb) to send midi events to Groove Agent One, or BFD Eco (if they ever make a 64bit version). I would like to send the output from each pad (and pedal) to its own track, recording 10 tracks at a time when playing 'live'.

Cool, now I understand what your after.

Well this is what you do with eco:

Ok, I followed your tutorial , and that is probably what I should be doing (Groove Agent has a similar output control). But, that is not what I was asking about. That allows you to control the volume of the various sounds in the vst instrument in separate tracks. What I wanted to do was record the events separately on each track.

In other words track one would record only events triggered by the snare pad, track two records only events triggered by the hi-hat , etc......
(I know that a multi timbral midi part can be dissolved to lanes by pitch)

I think the answer to my question is - you can't do that.

On your tutorial, what is triggering the sounds from BFD Eco?

In my totorial if IIRC I'm just using a pre done midi track. If I play it though, I'm using a Roland TD-3.

Are you saying you want audio tracks to work with instead?
