Stand Up Comity
We had a chance to give our dear friend's, and one of the smartest guys I know, MSH-2 active SDC omni mics a try. I was very much looking forward to it because I've used lots of SDC Bruel & Kjaer lab mics.

In the clip, they're plugged into a Yamaha MG10/2 and the inserts connected to my laptop soundcard. My playing is atrocious, but I think that you can hear that the mics are very accurate. I am impressed.

Here are his MS-H1s, and they look just like the MSH-2s.

Here's the audio clip.

And here's the setup:

Sounds really nice, apl. You can hear the liveness of the room, especially with the shakers.

I haven't tested my MSH-2s yet, but we just had the dampers on the Steinway replaced so a piano test may be in order.

And your speaking voice is just how I imagined it!! :D

I'm thinking of trying my MSH-2's out tonight. I might bring them and my mini-disc recorder and record the fireworks.

If I do I will post a clip.

Nice sound APL.

FWIW I thought your key jangling was masterful. :D

Thanks for the clip I might have to look into a pair of these for that price. Cool casing solution too.

:( I'm traveling and thus have dial-up this week, so no sound samples for me :( A guy in Italy just sent me a classical piano clip done with MSH-1s, but it's 18MB :(

Hey apl, I was thinking we need to do a set during the acoustic jam at Jamfest! (in lieu of "I Got You Babe" :o ) I have one tune we could do, "The Ballad of Dwight Watson", plus my Sixpence version of Ramones, I'm sure you could think up a couple more :)

My test with the MSH-2's

http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=4171

I had some DC offset issues and strange noise. I think it was due to having my Fostex VF160 plugged into a DC to AC converter then into a UPS in my car.
Also I was 3/4 miles away from the location the fireworks were setoff at.

I give guitar lessons if you are interested! LMBO! :D Howz everything going APL? Haven't seen you around elsewhere.

Those mics seemed really accurate, especially on the percussion instruments. I might need a set of omni-directional mics. Thanks for the heads up.

Hmm, that's a concern. Lemme know if that problem recurs in the studio.

I did a quick test this morning.
It is not the mic's. It was the DC to AC inverter that I had pludgged into my cig lighter in the car.

I set the mics up about 2 feet back from my monitors and recorded this
(I used the Bink Audio test CD)
L R
Dual Tones 700HZ L 1,000HZ R
700HZ
1,000HZ
Log Sweep 20 - 20K

Hey, Mic! Doin' fine. Thanks for the lessons offer, but then I'd have to practice.

Just used the MSH-2 in combination with a Studio Projects T3 on acoustic guitar, and Alex said the results were great, plus no noise issues.

Mr Gerst,

What was the configuration? Could a clip be posted? Do you have any further recommendations on how best to use the MHS-2s (or 1s)?

My son Alex did the recording. I'll hafta get the group's permission to post a clip. I'll see if I can find out the actual setup from Alex.

I don't know how different the MSH-1 is from the MSH-2, but I just recorded some of the best drums I've ever recorded with the MSH-1 as a mono overhead. Getting a pair of these mics is the no-est of no-brainers.
