Hello Just want to say first off I'm new to digital recording and have basically no idea what I'm doing as yet so please excuse me if this is a dumb question...Last week I ordered the fostex MR8 after stumbling accross this site I figured they are a good machine for the money allthough the CF card seems a bit of a joke...also I thought I'd get a mixer mainly for recording Drums or to record my band live so i got a behringer ub1204fx pro...now here is the question the mr8 is 16 bit the mixer is 24 bit does this meen they arent compatible in anyway ie you cant share data between machines  any help would be great I hope you can understand my naive but logical thought process

cheers Rapido :)

The 24-bit on the Behringer refers to the internal effects processor. Bit rates will not be a compatability issue for your signal I/O because your signals are not being transferred in the digital domain.

Thanks for the reply bearing in mind the fact i know nothing about digital stuff I'm not sure what you mean but its reasuring nonetheless

thanks Rapido

explination

hi rapido.

the behringer board is a ANALOG board. You will be sending an ANALOG signal into the MR-8. There is no worries about bit compatibility with analog.

what they mean with the 24bit DSP, is this:

you input a analog signal (such as your vocal mic) into the behri board. The board converts the analog signal into a digital signal (24 bit), and sends it through the Digital Signal Processor DSP. Then, it is converted back into a analog signal and continues throught the board to the output. This porcess is referred to as A/D/A conversion. analog/digital/analog conversion

Your MR-8 will then take the ANALOG signal from the board, and convert it to a digital signal (16 bit) and store it on the CF card in the form of a .wav file. THis is simple a/d conversion analog/digital

Thought you dont need to worry at bit matching, you do need to learn to gain match, meaning that you need to send the correct amount of signal from the behri into the MR-8, and adjust the MR-8 properly for recording also.

SO, i hope this explains it a little.

Thanks for the imformative reply as I have read on this forum you have to wind the clip all the way down on the fostex when using a mixer with preamps otherwise it will overload the signal...

Hopefully i can also run the mr8 into the mixer too with no problems as i'm hoping the mixer effects are better than the fostex.

so right now i'm reading the manuals and will hopefully start recording soon

thanks again

rapido

thats incorrect

the whole thing is gain structure, you run yur mixer as close to unity as possible, with no clipping in the mixer, then run that to the mr8, and turn the trim up, to the point it just starts to clip, then back it down so the red light NEVER flashes during a take, then your signal will be as hot as possible without clipping,

turing the trim all the way down and the mixer cranked up high, will result usually in analog clipping on the mixer, which doesnt sound much better then digital clipping

mixer effects

If you are mixing/mastering your tracks after recording it is best to add effects then, not during takes. Because once they are in there you can't get rid of them at mixdown. Some effects will ''collide'' with one another when mixing to stereo. Most pc mixing software allows you to add fx at the mixing stage. If you are mixing to tape use your mixer fx. If you are importing each track seperately from MR8 to pc software, use software fx. This method is ideal because of total control over each track and the ability to mix tracks and send them back to the MR8 on 1 track to use as reference to keep overdubbing. I use Power Tracks by Pro Audio.48 tracks. $49.00. New version has a 4 part harmonizer in it that works unbelievably well. Most guys in here use NTracks, which is about the same price and has 88 tracks. If your pc is compatible I'd go this route. Download wav manager from the Fostex site on the Support link. This allows you to import and export between MR8 and pc. Read past threads and don't be afraid to ask. Good luck. Pj
