I got my MR16hd about 2 weeks ago and i love it. Ive recorded some of my acoustic songs and it works great. But Today i brought it to my band practice and i had an issue that makes me worry.

My guitar amp and the bass players amp have line outs so we ran bass and guitar to inputs A and B and we played a song live with our drummer. after that i ran 4 mic's (A,B,C,D inputs)For the drums and my drummer put head phones on and we recorded him playing along with the bass and guitar tracks. But about half way through the song he said he kept geting off beat and when we played it back it was like the guitar and bass tracks were almost skipping, about half way through the song both guitar and bass would slightly sputter which screws up the timing on drums. So what the hells wrong lol?

So now i dont know if my HD is crappin out or if this thing is just a pile of crap that cant handle recording all 4 inputs at once.

I didnt hear any clicking in the HD.
Would the vibration of the drums affect it? Because I have an extension for the head phones but we had the recorder on top of a little table next to the drum set. The Drummer thought maybe if we moved it farther away and had sturdier table maybe it wouldnt screw up.

If anyone could help me out i would be greatful. Friday im getting together with the Drummer and we are going to mess around and see if we can figure it out. But im at a loss at what todo....

Don't know if you found an answer, but it's never a good idea to run from your amplifier's line outs to any multitracker. The pre amps aren't set up for line level instruments like that. You could have blown the pre amps.

Fostex is infamous for weak, noisy pre amps to begin with. You should have had your guys play to the built in metronome on headphones and mic'd the amps. Or mic'd the guitar and ran the bass DI into the MR-16HD.

Don't quote me...

I'm 98% certain that unless you plugged your line outs into the "Guitar" input on channel 1, they are line level. The XLR inputs and the Guitar input I believe are not designed for line outs. I very well could be wrong, but I'll check my manual when I get home (I have one of these units and never had the problem you're describing).

Your drummer's suggestion about moving it might not be a terrible place to start (if you haven't already). Hard drives can be quite fickle pieces of equipment, and if the unit was being jarred by your drummer (for ex. The kick vibrations), it might cause the HD to skip.

I would encourage you to call Fostex Tech support and check their forums as well.
