I am a total neophyte when it comes to recording and the limit of my experience is having other people operate equipment while I blast away on the guitar. I've decided I want to get started doing things myself and it looks like (after reading the forums), that the MR-8 is good for a simpleton like me. However, I've come up with a few questions that I was hoping I could get input on:
1) My computer is a Pentium 600 dinosaur with a 20gig hardrive 128 mb RAM running Windows 98 second edition. When I checked the Fostex Website it looks like it won't work. But I saw a post froma guy who had Windows 98 and I'm assuming he got it to work. By work I mean he had the ability to import/export files to the PC for mastering et al. So I guess I would like to know if it will work with my version of Windows. Which leads me to question #2
2) Assuming it will work can I get drumming software and use it instead of a drum machine? If so does anyone have recommendations? Or should I use a standalone drum machine like a Boss DR?
3) I'll probably only have a budget for one mic to start which will probably be a SM-57. Any recommendations for a good preamp (which appears phenomonally , beneficial from what I've read. I'ls like to get one for @ $100, if possible.
Thanks for the help I really appreciate any input available. I trust the people here much more than any salesman.

The mr8 will work wonders with 98...you just need a compact flash card reader. Due to lack of driver support, 98 wont recognize the mr8 if its plugged in directly, however get a reader from compusa (20 bucks at the most) and it will work fine. I have 98 so I know.

Your computer has plenty of juice to mix/master (I recomend the program N-track, www.fasoft.com, $49).

I dont know about drum software, I know guys on here love their Boss products.

ART makes a decent preamp that you can score for about 60 bucks at musciansfriend.com.

Hope this helps..I highly recomend the mr8...its a great little machine.

Well you're a guitar player. So you may want to get yourself a Behringer mixer because it has two preamps on it, in case you want the option of recording an acoustic guitar in stereo at some point. This will cost $70 and is great value for money. Plus you will probably want to have a mixer anyway for the drum machine if you decide to get one, as well as connection to the MR8.
However, if you want to try doing drums on the cheap the try this: www.digitronix.com.
It only costs $10 and actually sounds good, and is easy to program.
For multitracking sofware, I second Bigsnakes recommendation. N-track is incredible value and is truly a wonderful piece of software. Your computer has enough muscle to get you going and keep you happy for quite some time.
Another preamp that gets rave reviews is the 'Audio Buddy' by M-audio. This is great value for money and has two preamps on it. So again, it can be used for stereo recordings. I have one of these as well as the Behringer, and so far, I'm happy.
When you get going come back and ask us for plugin recommendations. You're in for a lot of fun. Good luck.

I really appreciate the prompt and helpful replies. Thanks.
