Just got saved by the MR-8's hidden 'virtual tracks'. After some time away, I returned to a "work in progress" and proceeded to accidently record over a good take. Having gone over it a couple times before realizing what I had done, "Undo" didn't work.

I was able to put the card in my reader, delete the "bad" takes from the .ADL, resequence the events (although that may not be required), and voila! The stuff I recorded over was back!

Hi, Snake

I'm using TextPad, although any text editor, like Notepad will work.

(TextPad is actually very handy (www.textpad.com) - it's a shareware editor, aimed at programmers and web designers, that was well worth the 27 bucks, or whatever it cost, to register.)

The track I accidently recorded over was part of another MR-8 experiment. I've been using my old Roland M-BD1, which is a MIDI sound module that has nothing but bass and drum samples from studio players. The problem is everything comes out of the same stereo outs, making it tough to mix. After creating my bass and drum sequence, I setup the MR-8 to drive Cakewalk with MTC, muted the bass track, and recorded the drums in stereo to 5/6 on the MR-8. Then muted the drums, un-muted the bass, hit rewind, and did the same thing, recording to track 1. This gave my rhythm track on the MR-8, with the bass isolated on it's own track, and everything in perfect sync.

mrx, if you have the time, could you please explain what the .adl and .bak files do, and how we can use them to get more out of the MR8. Thanks.

I am so confused.

How the hell do we do that!! Do we just plug it into our comp via USB, and the what????? Will someone direct me to a site where it can explain all that the MR8 can do? Because someone once psoted a lot of code for the demo song that came with it, and I want to know how I would use that???

Very Confused
Chris

I'll put something together that demonstrates this. I'm really hoping Fostex comes out with an OS upgrade that will support virtual tracks. Basically, if you don't erase a track, or use "delete unused", the MR-8 keeps everything you record in separate wavs. With a big enough card, you could record a dozen "takes" and sort it all out on a computer - even massaging the .adl to get your best "take" back on the MR-8.

This is a huge feature if you take your machine remote to record someone/something. You can record as many takes as will fit - just keep recording over the same track.

mrx.

Thanks for your time and knowledge.
REALLY HELPFUL!

Peace,
Flat-9
