yeah i need to know how/if it is possible to import a wav track that has no association with anything that i have been recording....so im using a blank card and just trying to import a beat track that i made in acid...is this possible....?

b

Hi Snake,

Yes it is possible - in fact, that's the feature that sets the MR8 apart from other recorders in this class.

I'm not sure if wav manager does this, or if you need an existing song. What I do is edit an .adl file to contain the name and length of the wav I want to import, then just copy both to my card.

I'll put together a list of specific steps with examples tonight. Several of us were talking about writing a utility that would make this process painless, but it never went anywhere. That's something I'll pick up again one of these days...

Ok so i can take an existing .adl and just make the file name and the lenghth match the song im importing.?

b

im guessing i put the track name between the quotes....what about the length?

b

Try creating a new song on the MR-8 and record some junk on one track. Use that ADL as a guide and rename your new wav to match the name in the adl, and change the time. That should work - the only problem I ever had was an error would sometimes appear on the MR-8 if the song played past the end - I suspect that was due to my adl end point not matching my wav duration. In those cases I was using bars/beats and just deleted the first "bar" after the song finished and that seemed to correct the problem - must cause the MR-8 to recalculate the end point, or something.

ok i imported a song with no problems what so ever except for the fact that the song was about 50% slower than the version on my computer...what is up with this?

b

Have you got WAVManager downloaded from the fostex site? I believe I once named the wave file "tr01", then imported it to a song I initiated on the machine using that program.

That's strange. All I can think is that the wav you imported and the MR-8 song are set to different sampling rates - is the MR-8 in extended mode?

Heyyy!

My fav big-headed no-talent buddy has a little red fireturck! Coool! I know you and me are going to be bestest budds now!

So what's the probelm here, mr ex-lax? Ooh, wav files! Tricky! Shouldnt you have should't you have mr. snake call Fostex customer service? Aren't you out gigging with your boombox?

Snake - call the experts. Mr. lax here is too smart to help you. Hisanswer will probably just confuse you even more!

Okay, what's our next problem, boss!?

Not really, since this site has an ignore feature. (I'll bet your parents wish for the same option.)

What the hell???? Either way, I dont have wav manager downloaded, and Im running in normal mode....I tried two different files and both of them were slower.....I havent upgraded to the new software yet...maybe this is having some effects....Ill give that a try...

b

Snake,

The OS shouldn't make a difference. What are the properties of the wavs you are importing (sample rate, bits/resolution, etc.)

Can you cut/paste the ADL you are using into a message and post?

Wav manager might help, but I've never used it. The other way always works.

The wav manager doc was a little vague when I first looked at it. Does it let you create a song from scratch? Fostex almost made it sound like whatever wav you reload into the MR-8 had to be the same length as the original, etc.

I'm not sure? After reading the first post again I realize what is trying to be done. I will tell you what I have done. I've had wav files both from the MR-8 and not from the MR-8 sent to me on CD and I used the wavmanager to transfer them into the MR-8 and both worked. I transferred them into song files that were blank. I didn't transfer them into the same song file. In the wavmanager you have to name the song you want them to go to. If it is a blank song he wants to transfer the drum track to I don't know why it wouldn't work. Is there already a song on the MR-8 w/recorded tracks he wants to transfer the file into? In that case it has to be the same length. He could transfer the existing tracks on the MR-8 to PC then transfer the drum track to MR-8, then put the tracks back and see what happens? I'm trying to help?
I forgot something, I do have v. 1.03.

for some reason this track playz at about half speed and im freakin out cause i need this for a project due on monday....!

b

Hi Bigsnake, if I were you I'd change the tempo of the drum loop to twice the tempo that you actually want, and then transfer it to the MR8. I'm suggesting this not as a solution to the transfer issue, but as a temporary fix so that you can move on with your project and get it finished by Monday. Doing this should ensure you have a drum loop that is the tempo you need.

Well after much jicking and cussing I still couldnt get the wav file to work at the right speed. Since i was running out of time i needed a quick fix. I put the mic on internal mode and just held it at an acceptable distance from the computer speakers, and just recorded it straight from that. The result was amazing.....it was perfect for what i needed......mr-8 still amazes me!

b

Good to hear it worked out Snake - I know what you mean, though - even the internal mic can surprise you!

I hope you will have the opportunity to take another look at the wav speed problem - it would be interesting to find the cause. Someone might even be able to make musical use of the ability to control playback speed if it's an ADL setting...

Did you ever find the sample rate and bit dpeth of the wav (should appear in windows explorer when you select it)

Mrx- from what I could tell the wav file is 41000 hz and 16 bit...nothing strange. Of course I am very interested in the issue with the track being slow.

I downloaded wav manager to try and transfer the track and had zero success. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to transfer tracks to the mr8 from pc?

thanks

b
