Taking the slow road
Fostex MR-8 FAQ

Well, I haven't seen one, so I'll do one myself. There's no need to copy what's been said here, but after using it for, maybe close to 2 years now? I think that's about how long it's been out.... I guess I know a few things about it.

I can't do it all myself, or it'll be incomplete. It's not such a complicated device to learn, so it shouldn't be so hard to cover most of it.

If anyone wants to contribute, then email me and put whatever credit you want, if you want it in the email. If you know stuff, found out stuff, especially if it hasn't been mentioned anywhere or is hard to find and you'd like to share it, then that would be nice to. It's a nifty little unit, even tho sometimes it can get annoying.... Some have said that I even said that it sucked at one point in time somwhere.... ;)

Of course, the format can just be intersting comments, usage comments, experiences, or whatever, info doesn't have to be in the form of a question and answer, even tho it's called a faQ....

I know it could never cover all the stuff a lot of us went thru in here, espeically considering the time it took finding the right CF upgrades, and different suppliers for them, and o/s upgrades.

I guess a lot of folks were interested in upgrading the CF, look at the size of that darn thread, that's just about useless now considering Fostex finally decided to provide a CF upgrade card. Would have been nice if......

Lots of folks helped out here in a really big way, very cool place to be. Oh, and I guess if it gets good, big, useful, gets good comments, I guess I can post it here at some point.

I have some space so I figured I'd use it since my own site development is going pretty darn slow but I'm paying for it.

BTW, I've seen it advertised in black, yuck.

And instead of using the click track, I've been using the midi out to a drum machine set to slave and using that instead.

It's been an interesting 2 years, it sure doesn't feel that long, time flies. Wow.

I'll leave the contact info here in my signature.

Great initiative! Fostex USA actually has a FAQ dealing exclusively with the MR-8. I suggest you get some inspiration from here, but observe the copyright notice... - I'll be glad to help building up the FAQ, but unfortunately my time is limited. I'll respond to questions asked here if I am able to, and then if you want to put my answers in the FAQ, just ask me first. Knowledge is for sharing...

regards, Nils

P.S. The adress of the Fostex MR-8 FAQ is http://66.12.44.170/km/pages/help_tree.jsp?id=570

Thanks for the link and info, that wasn't there way back when....

As far as material, there's a lot just from experience in the noggin, if I can type it out. No need to copy anything, I guess I could link to other sources if needed, but more html, at the moment, it's just preformatted text in the mid section...

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, and it would probably fall into a FAQ category of "how not to be an idiot", but screw it.

DO make sure to title your songs on the MR8 with names you WILL RECOGNIZE, and NOT FORGET which one is which...

I had two songs on MR8 last night titled "cr*p" and "f***er". I thought I bounced 1-6 to tracks 7/8, and so I deleted tracks. Much to my dismay the undo function only works on one deleted track, and I'd deleted 6. Of course I screwed up the bounce and had to then retrieve tracks from the PC, at which point I proceeded to overwrite the incorrect (ambiguously titled) tracks to the wrong file on the MR8

... GRRRRRRRRRRR....

I'd like to add that there were several beers involved in this incident...

I hate entering letters on the thing, I just use very short file names, and keep some notes. I'll go and change the file name of the final mixed wave file with the nice keyboard on the PC, and I'll have to enter stuff when I use the mp3 id tags anyway.

note: this is on hold for a couple of things. I'm asking about copyright stuff to prevent any problems later, and I now have some ISP issues w/ my provider disallowing my smtp mail thru them to my web site email address.....

Bummer dude! Let us know when the issues are resolved.

I would like to add, that my .wav file titles in no way reflects the content of the songs...At least not literally, though cr*p may relfect the sound quality and/or recording quality, it is not actually an integral part of the lyrical scheme.

Though now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever heard of a song called "cr*p"...
