MR-8: Check This New Post Out!

Holy Crap.

Actually, I don't think this song is crap.....but tell me what you think. I think its pretty good for the stuff we used!

I never thought I'd be able to do this with the Fostex MR-8. But here it is. My first post on nowhereradio with it. We have much more to go, and I plan on remixing our old studio efforts as well. This was all done on Cubase SX. Its actually not a finished mix. We still have some backups to put in, and even redo the main guitar parts (maybe some of you will pick out why).

Tell me what you think. I can't believe I did this too. I said I wanted to learn how to do this during the summer....so here it goes. I have lots to learn....so if you can recommend things for this mix....

Thanks!

here's the song link:

The song is called Beautiful Days.

Cheers,

Ok, first off the performances were really good. I couldn't hear the bass at all though. The drums need to be brought more into the mix, and maybe double the guitar to give it more presence. Is that you singing? Vocals are excellent. That little red box does a decent job don't it? Can't wait to hear the finished product. BTW, this is just my nickel's worth.

Its been updated......but i did the levels at the end with a faux pas.......earphones....but nonetheless...higher bass i think...and more drums.....i will spend more time on remixing tomorrow!

thanks so much for the input!

That's a lot better trandg, but I made a couple of observations.....look, you don't have to listen to me, I don't know a lot about mixing....but, maybe look at your mic placements on the drums. It's either that or EQ. Cymbals are a bit loud but the kick is barely present. The effect you're looking for at the beginning just doesn't work without kick and toms. Also, I'm not sure what caused it but the mix is a bit muddy now. How was the bass recorded? Maybe look at direct, if that's not how it was done. Again, just my nickels worth.

great sounding song. Like the others I think it comes down to a mixing/recording issue with the drums and bass (which is very hard I know)

The vox sounds great.

One question. How did you record guitar with distortion? Mic recording the amp? D.I. box and then added effects to the dry product? I like the distortion in the song. I'm having problems recording distortion with my songs and don't know what to do.

Thanks Enrique!

I used a few different techniques and I will disclose them to you!

Firstly...recorded through an AKG d600 dynamic mic. and another akg thats pretty high end, but can't remember which one.

I actually have a few different guitar tracks. The main riff you hear is a danelectro doubleneck guitar (used the 6 string) plugged in through a Boss blues driver, to a Vox AC-30. The second guitar track that is prominent is a Les Paul Deluxe through my Vox again. I have some EQ on the second main guitar in the mix. That you have to play with yourself. Its trial and error unless you have a sound you are looking for.

Does this help? I found that when I recorded in the past with solid state amps (I have a Peavey Classic Chorus 212)...the recording sounds like crap. A nice tube amp really makes it sound warm. But that is all equipment provided.....so you have to make do with what you got. You'd be surprised what a little eq can do. I really like the overdrive of my vox....but I use the blues driver to pump a little more crunch into it.

If you have any more questions or need more info...lemme know!

Cheers!

Great!

I'm starting to feel like a cheerleader for everybody, but this song sounds great in my opinion.
The drums, soft or not are rockin! I here what dad's sayin about the kick, but to me, people would defineately buy this song.
Good Job

trang,
I finally got to listen to this song (had some crazy computer issues going on with ad software downloading itself onto my pc and locking it up?). I thought the song was good and the vocals are excellent. I'm not a mixing genius, but where you could improve this recording I believe is in the mixing. It sounds like everything except the vocals and the snare are jumbled together. Like I said I'm not a mixing expert, but I will tell you some things to try.
1. What are you mixing on? I noticed you said something about headphones. Headphones will not give you good mixes. Before I got some monitors I was using computer speakers and got decent mixes by burning a CD and listening to it on different sources, making notes about what needed to be changed, and then going back and making changes. I would do this several times until the mix sounded good on most sources.
2. Try some panning with the guitars and drums to try to widen the sound. I've gotten good results by panning one guitar to about 11:00 and the other to about 1:00. Likewise you could also do this with other instruments and leave the vocal in the middle.

Overall, I think if you could "clean-up" the sound and get the muddiness out that this would be an excellent recording.

-You can now download the song to listen and listen again!
Hopefully things dont sound as jumbled...what do you think?

-Right now I'm using an Onkyo External Sound Card to my amp, then to my monitors. I use headphones on my laptop when I'm rushing and its late at night. But I only do that for quick tweaks. I don't like it normally.

thanks! mixing is such a new thing. I learned cubase in a matter of a few days, and now I'm trying to use it as much as possible to get the experience. So much to learn! So far you guys have been great help!
