Last night I recorded my daughters music program at church. With out any fancy set-up, I have 43 mins of a decent recording in extended mode. My problem is that I can't seem to convert this stuff into a WAV file to export to my computer. Is this because of lack of room on the card? Do I have any other options? I would really like to burn a CD of this recording.

Thanks,

Kmeister

I'm not sure but it could be because of "extended mode". Are you using the wavmanager?

What I would do

I would download Wav Manager, and just send the whole file to PC, and edit it there. Using N-Track or Cool Edit. Since there is no room left to do the wav conversion. Is the recording a one time track?

Hey thanks.

What exactly is a Wav Manager? And can I download an un-converted file?

Yes, you can transfer an unconverted file. Check out the fostex site or do a search of this forum for the link to download wavmanager.

You may want to check the manaul on this one but I think that you cannot out put songs digitally from extended mode (page 93 of the manual upper right hand corner). You only option is to mix down to a tape recorder or stand alone CD burner in "real time"

Yeah, I wondered about that. Not sure if the extended mode can transfer through USB or not. Could I record to tape. Erase the card and re-record individual songs, back to the MR 8, from the performance one at a time, convert each seperate song and then transfer to computer. Would this totally ruin the sound quality?

Since you cannot use USB to xfer from extended mode, it sounds like that will be you best bet is to record to tape then record back to your MR-8 piece by piece to xfer as 44.1-khz normal mode wave files. You may loose a little sound quality since you are going to analog then back to digital but I think if you do it carefully it won't ruin the sound quality (especially if you use a really really good CD quality cassette tape) that is the key, DO NOT USE A CHEAP CASSETTE TAPE!

I you do this please post an MP3 of one of the songs. I have not heard any recordings from the MR-8 used this way and would love to hear your work.

You might want to use a stereo hi fi vcr, you can record to the highest quality your original will allow.
Plus, with rca ins and outs it makes it really easy to use.

To a VCR? Explain this to me a bit more? What would the advantage be to do this?

What?

If you record in either mode. Normal or Extended. You can use the wav manager, http://www.fostex.co.jp/int/pages/sets/prodset.htm

Use this to transfer VIA USB to your computer, in either mode.
I usually record in EXTended mode. USB transfer is fine. With EXT mode you cannot transfer with the DIGITAL OPTICAL CABLE!!
but with USB, you can transfer the track files, The quality is the same, because it is digital to digital. There is no loss, except for after you mix files with N-Track Or another music software.

I believe the only difference with extended mode is the sample rate of the wav is 22KHz versus 44KHz. There should be no need for any conversion - just copy the files off the MR-8 and edit on a PC. The only possible issue would be some piece of editting software that can't handle 22KHz wavs.

As for quality, you should lose some high end, it should cut off at about 11KHz instead off 22, if I recall correctly.

wav

all correct you cant export a wav file from mr 8 in exended mode from channel 7 and 8 via the usb, its right in the manual computer your best bet

A stereo hi fi vcr has near cd quality, much better than cassette. By using a recording medium that is capable of storing higher quality than your original you should not lose much quality in the transfer. You may not lose any, but I believe every time you drop a generation (even in digital, btw), there is some loss in quality. It may not be noticible, but it is there. That's why I always try to transfer to higher quality medium, hence, stereo hi fi vcr, as no cassette comes close to freq. response and dynamic range.
Another reason I like the vcr route is the tapes are readily available, and even the cheap ones work just fine.

I wanted to thank everybody for their help. Special thanks to Mak1965. All I did was tranfered the file through USB using the Wavmanager from Fostex. I do not have n-track or Cool edit so I opened it just with Windows Media Player. Didn't have any editing capabilities but I have the recording. Thanks for helping out a newbie to the MR-8 and some one with limited computer skills!
