Hi everyone!
I decided to re-record Metallica's "To live is to die".
Why this song?
Well because:
1. It's a very cool song
2. It's instrumental, so I could try to reproduce it "all the way" without having to sing
3. There's a lot of things happening in the song, so I thought it to be a challenge to play, record and mix it by myself

I tried to match the partitures completely, with respect to the original. I did not try to match the original SOUND though. That's almost undoable anyway.
So I ended up with my version of "To live is to die", which quite resembles the original, but then with my OWN sound settings adjusted to my own taste, all dialed in without spending too much time.
[my opinion is that you usually get 90% of your sound within the first minute of tweaking, so why bother to spend hours on the remaining 10%?]
I played all the instruments myself:
- drums was done by me, playing the drumpads of my drummachine in real-time along with the song, without dubbing anything separately. No kidding! [This particularly was a pain, because I HAD to copy the original drums EXACTLY only using my fingers.. I thought this to be the easiest way for me, since I've become quite handy with playing drummachines in real-time. Also I kept a human-feel to the playing, which is also a +. My drummachine is not capable of storing such a big song anyway.
- bass was done with some crappy "Tanglewood" bass guitar through POD2.3. [It's really a crappy bass, but somehow I always manage to get a decent sound out of it..]
- guitars are all POD tones. I didn't spend a lot of time on tweaking. I just wanted a "fair" sound, and a good overall mix. I played electric guitars with my Ibanez SA. Acoustic guitars were done with a Talman guitar [quite cheap sub-brand of Ibanez]
About the mix: After adjusting volumes of all those tracks, most of it sounded quite ok already. So I didn't spend too much time adjusting tracks that didn't need it badly.
Funny fact: The song is completely synchronized to the original. You can play them at the same time, it keeps in track throughout the song
I hope you enjoy listening to it, and perhaps give me some feedback if you liked it.
Greetz,
Saz
