Hi everyone!

I decided to re-record Metallica's "To live is to die".

Why this song?

Well because:
1. It's a very cool song
2. It's instrumental, so I could try to reproduce it "all the way" without having to sing :)
3. There's a lot of things happening in the song, so I thought it to be a challenge to play, record and mix it by myself

here's the link:

I tried to match the partitures completely, with respect to the original. I did not try to match the original SOUND though. That's almost undoable anyway.

So I ended up with my version of "To live is to die", which quite resembles the original, but then with my OWN sound settings adjusted to my own taste, all dialed in without spending too much time.

[my opinion is that you usually get 90% of your sound within the first minute of tweaking, so why bother to spend hours on the remaining 10%?]

I played all the instruments myself:

- drums was done by me, playing the drumpads of my drummachine in real-time along with the song, without dubbing anything separately. No kidding! [This particularly was a pain, because I HAD to copy the original drums EXACTLY only using my fingers.. I thought this to be the easiest way for me, since I've become quite handy with playing drummachines in real-time. Also I kept a human-feel to the playing, which is also a +. My drummachine is not capable of storing such a big song anyway.

- bass was done with some crappy "Tanglewood" bass guitar through POD2.3. [It's really a crappy bass, but somehow I always manage to get a decent sound out of it..]

- guitars are all POD tones. I didn't spend a lot of time on tweaking. I just wanted a "fair" sound, and a good overall mix. I played electric guitars with my Ibanez SA. Acoustic guitars were done with a Talman guitar [quite cheap sub-brand of Ibanez]

About the mix: After adjusting volumes of all those tracks, most of it sounded quite ok already. So I didn't spend too much time adjusting tracks that didn't need it badly.

Funny fact: The song is completely synchronized to the original. You can play them at the same time, it keeps in track throughout the song :)

I hope you enjoy listening to it, and perhaps give me some feedback if you liked it.

Greetz,
Saz

Metallica!!!!!!!

Downloading...i'll let you know what i think when i;m done. I love Metallica, and when people redo their stuff, CANT WAIT!................................................................................................
I have downloaded and i must say that you nailed it. It sounds great for what you used to do it. People will probably comment on the drum sounds, but you have my respect for playing the drums realtime off of a drum machine...and they are on the nuts! The guitar parts are exactly dead on. As you mentioned the tone of the original isn't thier and i thought right when i heard the opening "man, i don't care for that sound" but as i listened further, my preconception of what the guitar tone should have sounded like was washed away. It was wierd almost like i forgot that it wasn't the original. The clean guitars sound a bit chimey, and overprocessed but still well played. I gotta give this a big thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!! Your lead tones kicked my ass as well, i liked them alot. Do more, do more. I am away from my studio(servicing) and i am unemployed as of last Friday so i am living through other metal guys works until i can record again. Damn fine job.

Fuck, I like your rhythm tone BETTER. That's a fat git.

My only bitch really would be the DI'd acoustics, but you played the hell out of them.

Whole mix seems pretty warm...which can be a great thing, obviously...just not sure about the low mids...they may be bunching up some...but if it works in your car, I'd say you're done, lol. Really nice recording.

(FYI - this was a headphone listen...so, all I can say is that it sounds really nice and non-abrasive on headphones).

Very nicley done. Can't say I like the guitar sound better, but not bad. That's a killer tune too.
