Actually normalize is great on small bits of clip. One bass note that's odd or one helping a low word in a vocal, but I've gotten to where I just grab the white line and crank it...sound like a drug reference
Cubase also has a Maximizer that will add some saturation/excitement to the mix if you don't over do it.
Export your stereo mix in to a new Cubase project window. Put a compressor, the maximizer, an EQ and a hard limiter in on the inserts. Play with boosting and eqing the mix. Set your max vol to .01 and push the mix up into that level.
