mp3 problems

i have a couple of mp3s that i have uploaded to several sites. on two of the sites they sound ok, but there seems to be a noticable drop in quality.

the latest song I uploaded sounds horrible. this particular site uses real player. it sounds like my guitar amp is underwater, or there is some kind of fish singing in the background. the same mp3 sounds allright on a different site.

does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

The encoder you are using may be a likely culprit. I haven't upped anything in awhile, but am currently using yamp. The fraunhofer in CPA9 is a monumental waste of time. I also have heard positive things about Music Match.
 
What sites are you uploading to? Your encoder might be part of the problem, but my guess (without knowing what sites you're talking about) is that it's whatever they're doing on the other end...You said one site uses real audio, are the sites you're trying encoding your files at a lower bitrate for a "lofi" preview type thing, or does the mp3 just sound crappy after it's uploaded? I'm assuming it sounded decent before you uploaded it? :)

I am using mmjb to convert wav files to mp3s. I have a song on mp3.com as well as ampcast .com. They don't sound great, but they sound much better than the song I put on garageband.com. You can hear it at www.garageband.com/baughan The song is entitled "I Love You"

This particular mp3 file sounds great on my computer,
but sounds awful on garageband. It almost sounds like a leslie cabinet has been added to my guitar sound, very strange.

I think I will try using a different encoder to see if that helps.

Dave - I checked out the song on garageband, and they are re-encoding it to a lower bitrate. The mp3 on your computer is most likely 128kbps, and the real audio file that i listened to was @ 64.1 or something like that (i dont remember exactly, my computer locked up 4 times while i was trying to listen to it)...So basically for that site you're stuck with the crappy sounding one as far as I can tell. Trying a new encoder won't really help because they're mutilating the song after you upload it :) You might want to put a link to your mp3.com site or something and say 'go here for a better sounding version' or something. Hope this helps.

Thanks, for some reason I thought they would not allow that. I posted my ampcast URL on my garageband artist page with no problems.

The ampcast version uses a different player, and sounds somewhat better. At least I can't hear that strange noise in the background. You can hear that version at www.ampcast.com/davebaughan

Yeah, it does sound a lot better on ampcast...'course, i'm on a T1 at work right now, so I'm probably getting a better quality stream than a lot of people :) Glad it worked out ok, the song sounds really good BTW.
