MP3 conversion

Shockwave

I recently converted a wave to MP3 and it sounded awfull, nowhere near the orginal in terms of fidelity! I used creative play center (part of sound blaster card software). If I'm to continue making MP3's, I have to get a better conversion. What makes the difference between good and bad conversion? Maybe I can change a value in the program. Is there a general consensis as to the best MP3 converter out there? Thanks.

It all depends on what bitrate you choose for your MP3. Anything below 128k/sec is unacceptable in my opinion. I personally never go below 192k/sec. Every MP3 encoder [should] have the option to change the bitrate - if it doesn't you shouldn't be using it.

I agree, I use 192 for everything. Seems the best compromise between sound and file size.

I either use Sound Forge, or there is a pretty good freeware converter you can download caklled Right-Click. The interface is basicly DOS, not too friendly, but it seems to work well.
