MP3.COM - the end of our troubles?

There should probably be some kind of "Quality Control" thing consisting of Slack, drstawl, and S8-N...they're the three that in my opinion are most cognizant of MP3 pros and cons...and whatever they would decide would be fine with me, because I am not very audiophilic, and wouldn't know the difference of most of what they're talking about anyway...we can't go into this thing thinking it doesn't matter, though, particularly if some by twist, some cds were sold to a public thirsty for these original tunes...done by "home" recorders...I'm willing to follow the above three's suggestions on this (lol if they can agree)...mailing a cd or tape snail mail to a compilation place is ok, uploading is ok, I'm easy either way...simple is usually a good way to go, complicated usually just gets, well, complicated.....gibs
 
Gibs: I'm flattered by your confidence in my input as to the ultimate format for this CD but I feel you've misunderstood my angle.
The quality control should be up to the individual contributors. My equipment is, from what I gather from the posts I've read, at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of total dollar investment. But I still don't want to have the quality filtered through an mp3 compression. Even Soundblaster-based studio work will suffer from such a bit-rate conversion. And one of the coolest things about homerecording is the actual quality of sound that can be squeezed onto a CD with a very minimalist setup. It's a veritable Declaration of Independence. The collective diversity, talent and skill levels here: just icing on the cake.
 
Uh...ok. So you would prefer a mail-in thing? Band-width-wise, there's no way any of us could send waves.....only mp3s..what about it Slack and S8-N? I'm getting really confused, which is complicating my natural stupidity....gibs

If we're just going to use our CD-R's, then I can help with this if we need it. I use Adaptec CD Creator, so I don't know if that's good enough for what we're planning, but it's here if we need it. I like the idea of burning CD's ourselves as Slackmaster mentioned. By the way, I did read your post in another topic where you answered my DAM CD question. Thanks.
 
I say no mp3. If there is ANY loss of quality.
And why upload .wav's? I we all piss cd's away burning out latest mixes before they are done.(Don't you guys? I do!), and postage is nothing. Lets mail the cd's (or casettes) to one of these GENEROUS guys who is offering to put them all on one cd. Once these monster .wav's are uploaded, they still have to be downloaded, right? too much time. Set a deadline to have the songs mailed in and I think this thing will start to move.
 
Welp, for one thing, it's just easier for me to upload a wave than it is to take a song in to work on a zip disk, burn a CD, and mail the sucker.

The people who have offered to burn the first CD have fast internet connections... and jitteringjim even offered to setup an ftp server.

The main problem with everyone mailing CD's is that it is probably less convienient to the person recieving them all. If they don't care, however, then it's not a problem. Either way it works.

ALL: send me your song title and length if you haven't done so. If you didn't recieve my last email (from sunday) then let me know.

I'm with Gibs on this one. Nobody seems to be addressing the submission part of the equation. I know we have plenty of time to decide, but if we want to go with the higher quality route, wav files are going to be all but impossible to upload for those with slower connections. That means submitting via mail on a burned cd, zip disk, or dat tape. If none of those are available to the submitter a cassette would work. Am I making any sense?
 
I'm with gibs and Layth. However, if some want to submit mp3s, then let 'em.
 
I don't think that submitting waves should be a problem for anyone. Yeah it seems crazy to upload a 50MB file on a 28.8 connection. But hell, I've downloaded plenty of 50+ MB files on my crappy connection. The key is timing. You start your download or upload before you go to bed. You wake up in the morning...and maybe it failed, maybe not. If it failed you try again. You're not really going to get into a pinch unless you pay for your internet service by the hour...which very few do these days.

In the case of Recording Engineer, a CD can be mailed to the appropriate person.

If you truely can't mail your submission and have no luck uploading a wave...then submit a high quality mp3 or wma. Sure the quality isn't as good, but there comes a point where it's going to have to be good enough if you want to get on the CD.

The offer for the ftp server still stands - upload your wav or mp3 and I'll burn a cd to send to the mastering party - that'll be easier than uploading to somewhere like x-drive, and then someone having to download it - for those with other formats, you'll need to snail-mail your stuff directly to Ed or wherever.
