Moving tracks: Digital Recorders to the PC

I am exploring using a standalone digital mixer / recording unit instead of a sound interface for capturing audio. What are the facilities for moving all the tracks from
such a standalone unit into the PC to a program like Sonar? Are there standard
file formats or can the data interfaces do this naturally? Would like to avoid having
to do each track separately. Are there
features I would have to look for in
the standalone unit to make this easy?

My HD recorder has ADAT Optical outs that I run into my audio card that has ADAT optical ins. I move 8 tracks at a time. Sync via midi. works like a charm.
