I currently am using a PC to record with. My audio interface in the Delta 1010. I use Sonar.
I am going to get a Mac, I would like something like the mbox, because I already have the Delta, but it looks like there are no midi inputs on the mbox. Do I have to spend $1,500 to get midi inputs....
Is protools really worth the money? Better than Sonar? I spent around $1,000...including the computer on the PC stuff. Is there another recording program and hardware that is good for mac?
Thanks any information on mac recording would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

How many inputs do you need? Are you using a desktop or a laptop?

You can get a good separate USB MIDI interface input for under $100 so the "$1,500" that you stated in your post... no idea where you took that from.

You can get a USB single midi interface for $40. They work on PC .and. Mac.

Go to www.hitsquad.com - they have recording software links for PC .and. Mac

You'll find all the big hitters there for Mac; Cubase, Abelton Live and, of course, Logic which is now Mac-only. Try out some demos.

Platform doesn't matter (I have owned PCs and Macs since 1984); you just have to find out what works best for YOU.

Pro Tools is great. Works great, nice interface, very clean and easy to use. Beware of the limited voices, though (32 in PTLE).

You might also take a look at MOTU's Digital Performer. It's a bit spendy but it's a great piece of (Mac-only) software. It's by far my favorite program for working with MIDI (*much* better than both PT and Sonar), and since you seem to be planning on using MIDI, you might give DP a good long look.

The MBox is a good deal if you're going the Pro Tools route and you don't need more than a couple analog I/O (and don't mind that it tops out at 24-bit/48kHz). If you need more inputs, there's always the Digi 002R for Pro Tools, or you could get a nice MOTU interface for about half the cost ... though you'd spend a good chunk of your savings on buying software.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I'm confused. You already have something (the 1010) that for one thing has higher dynamic range than the Mbox, yet you want to buy an Mbox? And buying an Mbox does not get you Pro Tools, it gets you Pro Tools LE. What's your signal path look like? If it was me I'd spend the $$ on a nice preamp or some other useful item.

1010 does have MIDI! Unless the MIDI In and out connections on the breakout box are to make it look pretty :)

The 1010 however, doesnt work on the powermac G5 Dual 1.8ghz made after June 2004..just incase that was the model you were looking at!

Still works on the single 1.8, dual 2.0 and dual 2.5 though.

Good luck!

PC to Mac

Yeah, I should've mentioned that I am keeping the pc and I am getting a laptop for traveling and to get familiar with macs. I am completely new to mac stuff and protools. Also I want an audio interface that has midi on it.

Is the protools LE version a lot different from protools.

Does anyone know why there is a significant price difference between something like the delta 1010 and the digirack 02?

Will a powerbook, 1.5 Ghz...say with a digirack and protools run as well as the Delta 1010 with Sonar?

Is protools really better than Sonar?
