MOTUs Manuals

I would also add that MOTUs written manuals are among the best I have encountered in both my professional/technical activities as well as my home activities. This is very important to me as a begninner hobbiest.

I had heard the Motu was primarily reknowned for their MIDI products; those are the exceptional pieces they make or something. I also have a version of Sonar 4 Producer edition I can use, but I've never really enjoyed it's work environment. For those that run Logic, would the MOTU be a good solution?

Most definitely. This is what we have at my college's studio, and it rocks.

What I'm trying to find out is if I can use the MOTU 24I/O without using any other mOTU products (so I could just patch it in and out of my external Mixer's inline patch. IF so, I'm there! :D

Get the motu 828 MKII, DP4.5 and a Behringer BCF2000 for faders. Works great, just like a Baby HUI. $750 + $325 + $200 = $1275ish

Unless you want protools and only 32 tracks, and want to spend more.

I would get the Mackie with Logic since the two were designed to work together - the Mackie was co-designed with eMagic before Apple got them.

The behringer uses the mackie templates, so it works just as well. It's only a fader controller, not that complicated.

btw, I was dealing with tht initial question a year ago and bought the MOTU828mkII. I use it with Sonar3Producer and have enjoyed it on my laptop. But sometimes I do wish I had bought the 002 instead. They are pretty much dead even to me. But considering the 002 comes with Pro Tools, and you have to buy a multitrack program with the MOTU (unless youre on a Mac) the 002 becomes a better deal. I have had no problems at all with the MOTU/Sonar setup. It's easy to use and sounds great. But for me, it gets a little old dumping files to put into Pro Tools in the big studios I do work in. In hindsight, the 002 would have been a bit easier with that.

Has anyone heard anything about the phantom voltage on the Traveller. I can't believe it can supply a full 48 volts (under load) to two LDC mics from a USB power bus...

I'm not quite sure I understand the question. Do you mean use the 24I/O without it being connected to the computer? Or do you mean using without also using DP?

I intend to use the 24 I/O and didn't know if I also had to have an 828 or some other MOTU interface to use it since it's just a "digital Patchbay".

I found out that it will work as a standlone interface to get you in and out of a Computer via Firewire, so I'm definitely going that route. 24 channels in and out simultaneously at 24 bit/96 K for under $1500? I'm there!

I'm not going to use Digital Performer, I'm going to Use Logic Pro 7.0 (or higher - whatever is out when I can make the jump to the Mac.)

I thought that the 24i/o needed a core system to connect to and otherwise needed a pci-card? More info please!

It does... it's an expansion to the PCI424 card that comes with many of MOTU's other products. The 24 I/O core system comes with the PCI card...
IT WON"T WORK WITHOUT THE MOTU PCI CARD... though I don't know whether it's compatible with the PCI324

The 24I/O IS an expansion or Core system. The uninformed see the Audiowire cable and think it's firewire. It's not. It has to be connected to a PCI-424 core system, which means either you buy a 24I/O Core System for roughly $1500 or you buy the expansion version (minus the core card) $899 and connected to a core system NOT TO FIREWIRE. The Audiowire system was developed for the 424 cards.

FYI - two 828MKII's will give you 20in/24out analog and something like 16 in/out digital for the same price AND IS FIREWIRE. Plus 4 decent Pre's.

Mackie baby Hui vs. Beri

Correct me if I am wrong -

I looked at the Behinger BCF2000. One BIG difference between it and the baby HUI is that the baby HUI has touch sensitive faders (when touched they write automation and disengage the fader-motors), while with the BCF2000 you have to manually switch it.

To me that was a big deal - I wanted a HUI so I could intuitively mix. (just grab a fader and make a change)

I'm a beginner but i have worked with protools on a 001 interface and sonar3producer with my motuHD896.
Personally I like the Motu and Sonar much more than i like protools for almost everything.
Sometimes i find myself thinking that protools would come in handy while i'm working in sonar....but more often than not i find myself saying, "This would be so much easier in sonar"

Anyway just my .02. I think the audio quality is better on the motu as well. It's more crisp. the pres sound a little warmer on the digi001 tho.
