Is anyone out there using the MOTU 896? Is it worth spending the money on?

I'm using an iMac with Cubase VST 5.0... What I've got now is working, but I'd like to record other bands and have the flexibility that a "real" studio has... Is the 896 the way to go in this situation?

The 896 is an excellent unit...I had one for about 6 months, and it is definitely worth the money (the built-in pre's are quite nice - very clean). It doesn't have enough direct hardware monitoring though (you can only monitor either 1 mono or a stereo pair at a time), and doesn't allow you to monitor the lightpipe inputs at all. This means you're stuck with having to do software monitoring on those channels (which introduces latency). If you don't foresee a problem with this limitation, then it's a good buy.

I needed to be able to do direct monitoring of all inputs, so I dumped the 896 and bought the 828MkII! Personally, I think the 828MkII is much more versatile than the 896.

You could go with an 828MkII and add something like a Presonus Digimax LT (Giving you a total of 10 mic pre's), and you'd still have the ability to add another 10 channels via the analog inputs and SPDIF. The 828MkII + Digimax LT combo will cost you a bit more than just the 896, but IMHO well worth the extra cost!
