motu 2408/Cakewalk NEWBIE

Hello.

I'm not an electrono geek, so I'm stuck. I have a new MOTU 2408 and I'm running Cakewalk on a damn fine machine. I got the hardware and software all installed, and Cakewalk recognizes the new board, but I can't get a mic that I have plugged into the board to do anything. The mic goes into a tube pre-amp then into the MOTU. The MOTU is simple, hooked into the computer card that came with it.

What obvious thing/setting am I missing?

How are you connecting the pre-amp to the MOTU? Is this an analog connection?
Have you tried other line inputs (e.g. a CD player or tape deck) as test signals into the MOTU?
