Folks this MOTIF8 Rocks! :D

I am trying to trigger the "COMBI" effects from SONAR. As you might know, the 'Combi' effects have a combination of voices and they sound awesome. When I select one particular combination from the presets(PRE-3) from SONAR, I only hear one voice....
For example in "Voice" mode if I play the "spacious" effect under "combi" using the MOTIF keyboard I hear hear the full sound of it including the arpeggios associated with it. If I select this preset from SONAR and sequence it, I only hear one combination...I dont hear the arpeggios etc....

How can I get the same effect from SONAR?
Thanks in advance.

I think you'll have to look thru the combi edit menus and see which midi channels the parts are triggered from. In the case of a combi that also uses keyboard splits, they won't all be on channel 1. Then copy the midi track in Sonar and assign the copies to output on those channels.
Usually, sequencers don't understand combis and only know about a synths multi capabilities. It's a common thing to simulate a combi set up by stacking multiple preset voices, say put a piano on channel 1 and 2 and have 2 identical midi tracks driving them. Pan the 2 pianos opposite and put a small delay in the second midi track and it can sound huge.
My own synth can do combis but I never use them as editing any of the instruments used changes any combi using them. I've always considered the combi an asset for live use where you would prepare them to suit each song but it isn't needed in a studio because the same thing can be done with greater choice in multi mode.

I saw something addressing Combis w/the Motif on the Motifator website. Do a search or post there. The Yammy folks are GREAT at answering questions, and the regulars on the BBS are pretty knowledgeable, too...

Good luck.

Thanks Guys! I will do more reading on this 300 page manual for Motif. I will also check the motifator site. If not I will follow Jim's suggestions.

I don't have a motif, but several of my synths are similar. For example the Roland XV5080 has Performances (similar to your combis) and patches (similar to your voices). To select a Performance, I had to find the performances as an instrument definition file, put it on channel 1 and not use the other channels for the XV... or it would change the performance (by replacing a string section with drums for example). Unfortunately, not every instrument has definitions for it's combi's and/or patches....

If that is not it, check to make sure that all of the channels of your synth can receive program change.... for example, if you call up a combi with piano on channel1 and strings on channel2 and your can't receive program change on channel 2, it will sound like a piano. Several of my synths have this "feature"

Hope it works out.

Take Care
