Some guy who's never made a record and isn't even a band, and maybe nobody's ever heard him play except possibly his mother, who just tells him to turn that racket down.

I don't know. There must be someone like that in the world.

If you'll forgive a slight tweak to your thread (ouch), Paul McCartney is a hugely underrated bass player.

George Harrison is underrated, hell i almost never heard about him other than in the beatles, until he passed away.

Paul Kossoff of Free. Killer tone. Monster vibrato. But you need to hear it on vinyl. "Best of Free" on cd just sucks. If you have a turntable do yourself a favor and round up copies of "FREE". "Highway", "Fire and Water"----------and discover the most overlooked of the great british classic rock guitar masters. If you are into shred, don't bother, this is about hitting the one right note at the right time with the right tone and pouring your heart into it. After 30 years I still get goosebumps!

Ahhhhhhh Free

I almost forgot about that group!
They most definately were a Fine Band!

Steve Howe of YES deserved more and coulda got it if he wasn't in a band playing 20 minute tunes!
(No Flames here as YES was a huge influence of mine as a kid)

Daryl Stuermer, who toured with Genesis, and got his first decent gig playing with Jean Luc Ponty, could shred.

I also always thought Robin Trower should have been a bigger star in his heyday.

Daryl was good during his days with Ponty, Phil Collins, etc. but it his four solo CDs that makes him my favorite guitarist. He has great phrasing, melodies, songwriting, and he occasionally shreds a little bit. Daryl is a god

It's also kind of amazing that he's played on albums selling close to one hundred million copies and yet no guitar magazines do interviews of him ?

maybe no one's heard of him, but Paul Leary from the Butthole Surfers.

listen to their old records from the 80s, he has the craziest, most irreproducable style ever.

(is irreproducable a word?) it is now.

Ian Mackaye from the teen Idols, Minor threat, and Fugazi.

Most would think he plays just noise but he can reproduce that exact same noise over and over...amazing.

I think Steve Howe got the credit he deserved. As far as I know he's generally accepted as the best guitarist in the world ever, in both the skill and inspiration categories.

The guitarist from the New Bohemians was really good and never got any guitarist type recognition as far as I know.

I don't know how well regarded the Chilly Pepper's guitarist is but I think his stuff is excellent.

Michael Gurley of Dada.

Just listen to the "Puzzle" CD and you'll hear some of the best guitar playing and tone you've ever heard... and he plays many different styles.

I'm not kidding, this guy is awesome.

Check it out!

Adrian Belew never seems to make the top 100 lists.
When he does receive recognition, it's usually for his experimentation. But beyond that he's got feel and is a great performer.

Excellent call. Especially for a guy who plays in a genre not known for having guitarists that can solo in more than 1 style.

To the pile I'll add the following:
Lindsy Buckingham - subtle, tasteful, unique, and hidden by Stevie Nicks' hair.

Neil Schon - say what you want about Steve Perry and Journey, but Schon kicks ass. Listen to Captured with the blinders off and you'll see.

Rik Emmett, Steve Stevens, Tuck Andress just to name a few others.

I do like Howe's playing, but his tone in my opinion is not even close to "good".

But overall, he's a phenomenal player.

Isn't there a similar thread around?
