Well, someone started a thread about underrated guitarists. So, being a bassist, I decided to start one for the most underrated bassists around.

While I can name hundreds of great bass players, I'd have a hard time listing underrated bassists.

I personally feel that Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix, The Experience), Graham Mayby (Joe Jackson) and Marcus Miller really haven't got the kudos they deserve. I understand most musicians know these guys. I'm just thinking about all the "listeners" that aren't familiar with these cats. That's just my opinion, but it's not about me, right?:D

Well, I'd be interested to see everyone's choices.

If you ask me, Marcus Miller is far from underrated. Talk about an awesome talent. My most underrated choice would have to be Kasim Sultan. The man has worked with everyone from Rundgren to Hall & Oates.

I've met and worked with many a "famous" bassist, but this was the first man whose hand I felt I had to shake, and tell him of his influence on me.

Ross Valory is not often thought of as a great bassist, but I have always just loved his tone and his understated, mature playing. Ditto Sting.

Pete Trewavas of Marillion plays some great lines. Doug Pinnick of Kings X also plays some great lines that really fit the bands songs. Percy Jones is an awesome player that has a pretty unusual style. Dee Murray of Elton John's origanl band was a great player, each of his lines is like a little lesson in pop bass playing.

I think Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan, and Steve Harris are one of the most talented bassists out there! And Victor Wooten.

Ho yes, John Paul Jhones of Led Zepplin was amzing!!!!!!

Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas)

Billy Gould (Faith No More)

Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith)

Kim Deal (Pixies)

Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies)

Sting

I-don't-know-his-name from The Mission

Eerie Von (Danzig -former-) he rocks!!!!

John or Andy? Taylor (Duran Duran)

and so many others I can't remember...

Dan Trocke (Dr. X, Rated X, Back Alley Band, Golden Strings).

Excellent technique in a single guitarist band. Flashy and fun when needed while understanding when to back off or come forward.

Steve Kilbey (The Church, Jack Frost) is HUGELY underrated.
Robert(?) DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots-- I love his playing on #4.
Any bassist that played with Roxy Music from '72-'82. All are varied in style but all are stupid good.
Ditto on Graham Maby and Colin Moulding.
Andy Rourke (The Smiths)
Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins)-- not flashy, but solid.
and the bassist for Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
I should learn his name...

I got a bass for Christmas and am learning how to play bass without sounding like a guitarist playing bass (which, to me, is what a lot of bassists seem like). Much harder than it seems!

James Dewar. -Robin Trower's old bassist.

James Dewar- Great player/great singer.

Andy Rourke--->Smiths
Colin Greenwood--->Radiohead
Peter Kruder--->Kruder&Dorfmeister

Paul McCartney is truly underrated IMHO.

This man represents the lost link between rhythm and melody and all anybody says is, "McCartney ain't shit, man....anyone can do that."

heylow, McCartney's not underrated as a bassist,...

I've seen many discussions where people say what a great bassist he is. He's well appreciated as a bassist, and that's probably why he wasn't on this list.

Mostly, I see a lot of praise of Paul McCartney on HRcom, except from the <20 crowd, like WEBCYAN, and other members 'round his age.

When you think of bassists, you'd probably think of Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, Sting or Flea, but would you think of James Dewar?

James Dewar is the underrated bassist, IMO.

Ok, I forget his name but I cant let go of the band in this bbs it seems.

Blues Travelers bass-player. He rocks. Can one consider him to be underrated?
