I love Jimi Page, he's one of the few great groundbreaking musicians in modern time!

Listen to "Houses of the holy" for example.

Hans,

Groundbreaking?......

I'm not saying all he's done is crap. He has some good stuff, But have you sat down and listend to the solo on Whole lotta love? (the one right after the break) If that is not the slopiest excuse for a solo I don't know what is.

eyeslikefire,

Musicianship isn't all about solos. It's about writing songs too having a vision. The hard rock scene changed after Led Zeppelin.

My goal in life is to be overrated. Everyone's should be.

BB King without a doubt. He has about 4 tired licks and doesn't even attempt chords by his own admission. And don't give me that tired old "but he has feel" argument; no way. Overated.

Clapton has a few great moments (Crossroads, i.e.), but his day ended with Cream. Overated.

Hendrix? No way. Sloppy? Sometimes maybe; but can you really listen to Voodoo Chile ( Slight Return) and not be moved? Foxy Lady? His playing was revolutionary. His whole chordal approach to soloing for example. And remember, this was a time when you just didn't walk up to a Guitar Center and have every imaginable effect at your disposal. Not overated.

EVH? I won't even discuss this one. Not overated.

Ok, let's speed it up:

Satriani? Not Overated.
Vai? Overated.
Kirk Hammet? Overated.
CC Deville? (chuckle) Overated.
Santana? Overated.
Malsteen? Not overated.
SRV? Hmm.....Not overated. I mean, it's the blues fer cryin' out loud. How innovative can you be? He was a beacon in a genre that's saturated with so-so's.
Buddy Guy? Overated.

How's that?

Definately Jimmy Page

Just watch the "Song remains the Same" movie.

Clapton, BB King, Santana, Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen all fit the mold also.

And this local guy named Kurt when I was a kid...............
Everyone thought he had chops but he was a major Hack artist !!!

Man I'm glad after 25 years I finally got to say that!

Randy Rhoads.

He may be a technical innovator on some level, but I can't get past the horrible sound of his guitar to really appreciate him. Kudos to him for being a great guy and certainly one to look up to and respect, but he wasn't as effective as everyone makes him to be.

Cy

Me. Totally overrated.

And oh yeah, Santana.

Everything I hear from him is way sharp, and just boring as hell, and Paul Reed Smith and Mesa Boogie are throwing guitars and amps at him like they're going out of style.

Hey PRS!

I can tune my guitar sharp too! Send me some stuff!!!

jcmm

Everyone needs a party sometime....and they made a movie about it. Listen to the albums instead.

I'm actually an overrated bass guitarist and I'm proud about it ...and women love me for beeing honest ;)

Danny Carey (just kidding)

Uhmmm... how bout James Taylor. He is an incredible songwriter, but I heard a kid at a music store say he was the best acoustic guitarist ever and I just don't believe that. He can finger pick... and...

but don't get me wrong, as a songwriter he is one of my top 25 ever.

Later,
Musik

Bed time for me now, 1:10 night time here in Sweden.

Another day is ended for an overrated guy, hope I will wake up as a master...

I will check this discussion tomorrow and join you.

Ok look, I am in agreement with just about everyone BUT!!!!!
RANDY RHOADS...OVERRATED?????
NO WAY...DUDE....WHAT THE????
Malmsteen is not overated but Randy Rhoads is...thats CRAZY!!!
Let me clarify my vote for Hendrix. I love Hendrix and as I said before, when he played it staight he was fantastic...Red House, All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Child...great stuff, but come on...his most famous song "Purple Haze" I mean that just sucks, its doped up nonsense. The suck-o-meter on Hendrix was pretty high, listen to Are You Experienced, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Crosstown Traffic. THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER!!!! what kinda crap was that, my dog can sit on my guitar and make it sound like that!!!

JH's version of the SSB is the best music I've ever heard EVER! Although, I can understand why some people might not like it, when I hear it, I hear all the pain and anguish of a nation at war. Not just with Vietnam, but with itself as well. Hendrix's masterful use of dissonance in that song is without match. But, most people can't listen to dissonance except in a horror movie soundtrack.

Eric Clapton definitely! First of all he can barely sing(he talks) and secondly I really don't find his guitar interesing. It's extremely boring... He needs to move on and improvise more...

Amen. Not only is he sloppy, his leadwork is unoriginal. Remember when the self-titled Whitesnake album came out in the 80s and Robert Plant got all indignant about how David Coverdale had ripped off LZ's essence? I thought that was some funny shit, considering how LZ took riffs and parts directly from old blues songs and called them their own. But despite all that, I still like LZ overall, and I think Page is a good guitarist, particularly on the acoustic.

I disagree about his effectiveness. His sheer musicianship pulled Ozzy's nuts out of the fire. And I don't think his guitar sound was horrible, although I tend to think that Max Norman's engineering/production could have been better. I think he is underrated if anything; he made it cool to use non-power chords and non-pentatonic scales/modes in metal, kind of an American answer to Michael Schenker.

But I don't mind you having your opinion — even if it's wrong. :D :p :D

P.S. By the way, today is RR's birthday. He would have been 46. Such a tragedy to have died so young. . . .

I have no problems with LZ, as a matter of fact I really like a lot of their songs. I just don't have a deafs ear when I hear crappy guitar work no matter who its from.

Musicianship isn't all about solos. It's about writing songs too having a vision. The hard rock scene changed after Led Zeppelin.

hrn, I am not refering to musicianship or vision OR song writing ability. I was refering to his guitar playing.

Beaver, I agree with you man. he did much better acoustic work than electric.
