Most overrated Beatles song?

If you make fun of the Beatles music then you haven't listened to it enough. Period.

That was my point. I didn't give it a chance because of trendy latest and greatest and being childish.

Kind of like food that looks gross that you joke about before you try it. Its easy to do, then when you take a bite in private your eyes are opened.

That nevery really happened with brussel sprouts though. I tried those and realized why they have that reputation.

i think to a certain degree your right....its hard to seperate the history from the track itself..

but when i slap on "paper back writer" i am just blown away by the whole craft of that track ....if blur had done it i would love it just the same.

but for sure a lot of their lesser tracks get more respect for who they are written by ...but a well crafted pop song will stand the test of time and so far alot of those tracks are staying true to the course.

...people still smile and listen when a beatles track comes on....and thats the litmus test.

Yea ! Best recorded…crafted piece of art. Put on a pair of headphones and listen to Paperback Writer. It’s amazing.

For me the most overrated Beatles song is probably - Hello Goodbye...Its an ok sounding song however it repeats itself a bit to much for me.

I like the beatles music and listened to it a lot when I was growing up in the 70's...i had an older brother who used to buy a lot of music and I would listen to the beatles every night when i went to bed.

Having said that though i have never bought a beatles record for myself...i have learned a lot of their tunes from tapes my brother made for me however i was spending my cash on Zeppelin and Van Halen records...

Julia is one of the better songs from the white album. Julia was John Lennons mum who I believe got run over and killed by a car.... listen to it again and think of this...... this subject is also where the song "a day in the life" originated from..... he blew his mind out in a car.

I very much like a lot of Beatles songs (most of the Sgt. Peppers album, "Strawberry Fields, "Golden Slumbers", to name a few)...I don't care for "Get Back" (as in "Get back to where you once belonged")...I hear it a lot on the radio, it must be considered a great Beatles song, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Most people know this song is about his mother, since her name was Julia and all....

I just think as a song, it's not all that interesting. It's got some nice lyrical images, but as for the music, melody, etc., it just kind of doesn't really go anywhere to me.

Anyway, "Day in the Life" wasn't inspired by his mother's death. It was actually inspired by events Lennon read in a newspaper.

the Long & Winding Road;
the 2nd half of Abbey Road (they didn't work on that album but subsequent covers have found some hidden beauty):
most of the music hall pastiches on Sgt Pepper's and
a fair chunk of the Spector album - the more Paul was able to maul, (the last few albums), the less I liked - though that's a rabid generalisation as I really like the "White" album..
Of their latter period I LOVE Rev #9, You Know My Name, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps & Helter Skelter.
The smile factor - well nostaligia covers a lot of cracks - how else could you explain the return of disco!

The white album is one of my desert island discs.... and if i had to take one track off of it, it would be without doubt, piggies. Thats a track that hurts my ears, but Julia, well thats kind of easy to listen to..... i love the line, "half of what I say is meaning less". Its good for me just for that line.

I agree it's easy to listen to, that's for sure. It's just that it doesn't really do anything else for me. Yet I hear it mentioned all the time as one of Lennon's greats, and when you compare it with others like "Strawberry Fields," "In My Life," "I'm So Tired," "Come Together," etc., I just don't think it holds weight.

Obviously, the Beatles are the greatest, but which song of theirs do you think is most overrated? That's not to say it's not a good song still, but it just may not be as great as so many of their others.

But I am still not sure if they are where they are in our universal cannon simple because they where there at the start and helped define popular music and rock stars and so much more.

I would suggest that Paul McCartney is a modern day Gershwin, Cole Porter, or even Schubert. I get what you are saying about being in the right place at the beginning, but in my opinion only 3 of them were. McCartney is the real deal and has proved it for 40 years. He is an ubertalent, the kind that comes once a generation. His gift for melody is something that only a handful of people have possesed.

I dont know how he is lyricwise, I dont feel I can judge them as I am not a poet. He also has plenty of crappy songs but even Beethoven had some clunkers. But the guy can come up with melodies that are in the same league as Irving Berlin, Leroy Anderson, Porter, Gershwin and Richard Rodgers.
