KURT COBAIN?????

COME ON MAN, HE WROTE EVERY DAMN SONG NIRVANA PLAYED, WHICH IN RETURN, MADE HIM AND THEM FAMOUS. IS THAT NOT SKILLFUL IN YOUR EYES? AND IT WASNT THIS MAINSTREAM BULLSHIT LIKE BLINK EITHER, MOST OF THEIR FANS WERE FOLLOWING THEM WAY BEFORE MTV PLAYED TEEN SPIRIT.

You obviously need to listen to more Beatles. George Harrison is possibly the most underrated guitarist in rock.

Oops:D

BTW, i don't know if excessive talent is paramount to making good music.

Wish I was overpaid.... Even if it meant I was underskilled. :D :D :D

Me too.

BTW Punkerproducer I don't mean to slam your thread, just saying what I think. I agree that those peope are not great guitarists (except maybe Harrison). I think they are great at writing, arranging, or some other aspect of music, and maybe this justifies their success.

I hope this doesn't come off as a rant but here I go anyhow.

Im a shredder at heart, I have a few records from Mike Varney's label Shrapnel, Im also a card carring Steve Vai fanatic and member the Greast Kids Stuff club. I have a Box Set, picks.....etc.

I think all those guys in your list a probably far more talented on guitar than the music we hear on the records. It may not be true exclusively, but all these players do what makes the music work as a band. I have a friend that played in a country rock band. They did openers for big name bands on some pretty big stages. They disbanded about 6 years ago from a combination of health problems mixed with a slew of bass player changes that cause personality friction. What he played on thier demo's, albums and in concert was your atypical country rock solo and rhythm, with a little bit of southern fried rock. Nothing impressive by any stretch of the imagination. But....

Since we were best friends I saw him at rehearsals and in the studio let alone from jam sessions we would have once in a while. There was almost nothing he couldn't play. He could easily go from SRV to Eugenes Trick Bag, Brian Setzer and Even Devo on a dime. Since then I've never judged a musicians ability based upon limiting context of being in band that specializes in only one genre.

IMOYMMV....LMBOATM ;)

I hate Creed. Their songs all sound the same. The vocalist is annoying as hell, and Tremonti, their guitarist, sounds like he is playing through a fucking can.

However, I have read interviews on Tremonti. Aside from the fact that he comes off as a down to earth dude, he has a high appreciation for the good metal of days gone by.. That he spends hours on shredding and stuff that he admits has nothing to do with the Creed style.

I guess if he actually likes the music he is playing with Creed I can't fault him too much.

My latest band I love to hate is The White Stripes. Give me a break! Anyone else think they suck? The dude plays out of tune guitar half the time and the skanky chick drums like a retard.

The Stripes were on Conan every night a few weeks back. They really have little to offer in the way of talent. I never thought there was such a thing as bad three chord punk rock. I stand corrected!

They seem to be the hot thing at the moment (flavor of the month), perhaps in protest to the over produced music of the last twenty years. Any idiot can go to Guitar Center and buy gear and effects that can make them sound like anyone or any band ever. Even with very limited talent.

I dunno, maybe it's just me. But I take my music seriously. If the dude got rid of the retarded girl drummer and added a bass and guitar, it might sound better. But the novelty would be gone.

The dude in The White Stripes plays sloppy guitar with no technique and heavily depends on a massive array of digital effects. He butchers his own three cord songs. While what really pisses me off is the lil'bitch trying to play one drum in time. After years of developing my style of "John Bonham meets Neil Peart" it just kills me to think that the noise they make is called music.

Mark my words... The White Stripes will be no big whoop in a year.

Your list looks about right....

:p

Im just a 20yr old black male just picking up guitar, but i think that Santana and Mayer are pretty good...
Please excuse the fact that i havent heard a whole lot of the other players...

Most overpaid and underskilled guitarists? How about the Edge from U2.

define "overpaid".
define "underskilled".

most of those guys you listed are known for their songwriting and ability to work WITH a band, rather than their ability to shred.

give me 100 steve vais writing 203984750982436 songs that don't move me, and i'll give you a handful of "poor" guitarists that write songs who do. i'm willing to take the latter anyday.

guitar as a refined trade skill is great, but brilliant, beautiful songwriting lasts forever.

how many vai/johnson/satriani songs change people's lives? i mean people who love music, not just people who specifically love tech in any form. the first group is much larger and sometimes the second group can dig the first ideal. i am strongly in the first camp, being a songwriter and no shredder, but i repect both. it's just the first that makes life worth living in my opinion.

The most overpaid, underachieving guitar player right now has to be The Edge.
I think a name like "The Sludge" would be more appropriate for him.

I'd also have to put the guitar player from Green Day on the list.
Billy Joe somethin-or-other. He could'nt play a decent solo if his life depended on it.

Hit the nail on the head there Mega Drummer......

I'll have to agree that some on your list are orerpaid and underskilled, but you have to admit for someone to have been around for as long as Clapton or Santana, they have to be doing something right. The ones I wonder about are some heavy metal guitarists who use so much distortion that no matter what they do, it sounds the same. At least now I know why I never made much money with guitar, I spent too much time becoming overskilled, OK I bragged on myself a little.
