In your opinion, what is the most important part of a song?

Tough question!!!

All the parts are pretty important. Here is a ranking of how I tend to look at it...doesn't mean it's right...just the way I see it...

1. Hook/Title
2. Chorus
(if you don't have these things rock solid, may as well not go on IMO)

3. First line (need to grab listener's attention)
4. Line that leads in to the chorus in each verse/bridge (important both melodically and lyrically to set up the chorus and create excitement for it...also important to make sure the transition to the chorus makes sense)

Of course, these are just some parts. Every line is important and needs to support the main theme of the song. I have critiqued a lot of songs that just did not have a congruent story line. That's important too...it has to make sense.

Of course a good melody is very important...as important as good lyrics for a great song.

Hmmm....I guess everything is important, eh? :D

i agree with you about the first line. when hearing a new song on the radio, i find myself waiting till the first line before i make the decision to leave it on or change it. i know that's very judgemental of me...but, oh well.

i also think the general identifiability of the subject matter is very important. if the listener can't relate, you're done for.

another big thing for me is where the listener "is" at the end of the song as opposed to the beginning of the song. does the song go anywhere? does it pick you up, move you and leave you in a different place?

not to mention melody and structure...etc.

Intro.
Thats what makes the listener want to keep listening [or not...]!!

It must be a mistake! I never win anything. Oh, All Fool's Day to you too!

Initially, the most important part of a song for the songwriter is the part that makes you realize you are writing something meaningful, maybe even something wonderful. Finally, for the songwriter the most important part is the last few edits when you know you have fulfilled the inspiration that got you this far.

At the record store, on your web site, on the radio, on mtv, and any time anyone is referring to the song, the most important part of the song is the title.

When you are singing along, the most important part is whatever helps you remember the words of the song -- the title, the chorus, the melody, the story. When you are listening, the most important part is the part that makes you want to hear that song again --- the title, the chorus, the melody, the story.

When you are looking back to younger days, the most important part of the song is the part that represents how you felt when the song was popular -- the magical part that turns that special song into a time machine, transporting you back to a precious time of life.

For me as a writer, the most important part of songwriting is the feeling of joy that overcomes me when the words and music I am working with start sounding like a song.

Keep writing,
Don

The chorus is usually the most remembered part of a song that non musicians tune into.

If playing live to an audience then it would be the begginings and ends.
If you screw up either, they remember, and, don't EVER stop in the middle of a tune.

What if the song doesnt have a guitar in it?
You cant say exactly the most important part of every song. How can there be a rule? The best part of each song is different and even then its debatable for peeps!

Or the cow bell.

Oops!

Forget what I said before; obviously, the most improtant part of the song is the cow bell. SNL can't be wrong.:p

Ok, here's my real answer:

The parts of a song are inextricably linked. You might have the best, most memorable chorus in the world, but without the verses setting it up properly it won't work. Every part of a song depends on every other part of the song to do it's job. A song just isn't finished until every part is important and fulfilling it's function.

You might as well ask what's the most important part of a painting?

...the answer of course is 'The Paint'
