I Like Rusty Spoons
anybody own one of the originals or the re-issues that were made a while ago? if so i was wondring how they sound, the only mosrite i've heard was from ramones cds i own.

I've played an original Ventures II (like Johnny Ramone) as well as one of the reissues. And no matter how hard I tried, it doesn't sound like any Ramones tune I've ever heard. Johnny's wrist only technique and strumming patterns just create these beautiful overtones that cannot recreated except in his hands.

However, a Mosrite sounds great at what it's good for- mainly, surf and punk rock.

If you can't afford one, check out a Univox Hi-Flyer or the models from Flav Giorgini I've heard the GPC used live by Philip of the Teen Idols, and it sounded great. Plus, they look cool as can be!

yeah, i saw a bootleg of The Queers and Phil from teen idols was in the band playing a GPC, sounded nice. Joe Queer also uses a GPC based on his fender design. Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio too.

Johnny didnt use a stock pickup in his Mosrite, He changed it out. I cant remember what he put in there but I think it is a Dimarzio.

From what i understand, he didn't change it until the original crapped out on him. The first bunch of recordings and shows were with the original.

after the original blue one he bought was stolen, he bought the white one and put the dimarzio single coil in it. the original sound of the blue mosrite with the stock pick ups can be heard on ramones, leave home, and rocket to russia

i have a univox hi-flyer from the 70's, it sounds like crap. but i bought it because it kinda resembles a mosrite, but not really.

the lead guitarist from 'man or astroman' uses a ventures mosrite, mark IV, i believe. high output guitars.

I saw the Queers on their last two tours- the first (with the Eyeliners and The Independents) Phillip played guitar with the Queers. On the last tour, the Teen Idols came along, and although Phillip used his black Rickenbacker for 75% of the show, he switched to a sparkly Ben Weasel GPC model after his string broke. I talked to Phil after their set, and he says he really likes the GPCs alot.

One more thing:

I believe that Road to Ruin is the only studio record to use the original mosrite pickup. I believe right after the filming of Rock and Roll High School (check it out to hear the old pickup) he had Tommy Erdelyi (1st drummer and Producer) put in the DiMarzio for End of the Century...

Then they hightailed it to LA for their experience with Phil Spector-

(check out DeeDee's book for a detailed account)

I'm also intrigued by this new Mosrite lookalikes by a company whose name starts with....... a D, maybe? Gel from the Eyeliners uses one, and I saw the guy from the White Stripes with one on Saturday Night Live.

Anyone know?
