Hey all
I was wondering if any of you do anything to help with seperation/clarity of guitar tracks in general. More specifically I mean...if you have recorded two overdriven guitars and maybe you have panned them respectively, maybe not, do you try and eq them in any way, especially as they are probably fighting for the same space? Just wondering as when I listen to song from artists like Iron Maiden....they have great overdriven guitar tones and huge seperation. When I listen to my own recordings (panned etc in a simular vain to Iron Maiden) they sound a little mudded.....

Thoughts...?
Lee.

Probably the less you do to them, the more seperated they will sound.

EQ, volume and dynamic processing would probably help you the most. compression on the final guitar track also helps guitars stay in thier space.

EQ and panning

I like to pan each track very wide if I'm strictly doubling rhythm tracks. After finding a good sound and recording my first track, I like to scoop a dB or two out around 1k (roll around the mids with your eq until you find the sweet spot.) for the second track. It's kind of a paint by numbers way to mix but works well for very overdriven guitars. Also make sure that the playing is very tight with the first guitar track.
