i went around pricing sound cards today, i really dont have the money to buy one with 8 inputs but i would like to mike drums and what not, does anyone know of a card that has an exansion option to add more tracks at later date when i have more money

There are two cards that are fairly cheap that allow you to add extra cards to your system. Two of them being:

Terratec Phase 22 - you can add a Phase 22 or Phase 26 or something for more inputs
M-Audio Delta 44 - you can add an extra Delta 44 for 8 inputs

A Delta 1010LT (8 analog inputs) isn't that much more expensive than a Delta 44. The expansion route will cost you more in the end and potentially give you more headaches to get it working.
When miking a drum kit you probably find yourself constricted pretty soon with just 4 inputs. If you think you can't afford the extra $50,- for a Delta 1010LT instead of a Delta 44, you'd better find a new hobby.

If you want to work with Pro Tools: go with the Digi 002 rack.

If you want a cheaper option: MOTU is great, but then again: with extra software it is maybe not that much cheaper.

Delta 1010 is id a good alternative

I went the delta 1010 route, was my first big payout> I later added 2 delta 410s giving me 12 in/24 out back to the desk for what now seems like a very small price. Don't scrimp on convertors. Your sound depends on them.
