I have a fostex fd8 which only allows for 2 simultaneous record tracks. what are the routes i can take to expand this inhibition. i would rather not have to resort to a pre-mix.

In order to record more than 2 tracks at a time, you have to resort to the digital inputs. Either add 2 more tracks via the SPDIF or go 8 tracks via the ADAT input. A popular route is to use one of the Fostex Digital mixers such as the VM200 or VM88 to get 8 tracks of ADAT. The VM04 and VM08 will get you 2 tracks of SPDIF. There are also a number of mic pre's that have digital i/o as well.

Fostex VC-8

Actually, If I had the $$$$ I would go with the VC-8 A/D/A ADAT converter from Fostex. This allows you to use your external mixer with 8 direct outs and output to 8 ADAT channels and vice versa. The VM88 and VM200 ADAT outputs are pre-eq . So you get no help from eq or dynamics during tracking. The VC-8 allows you to use all of your channel strip EQ of your mixer, if it has direct outs for each each. Just my 2 cents.

No way! Are you sure? that's a pretty dumb move if it's true! And that also would severely cripple the VM200/VR800 package they were trying to sell a few years back.
