More Stupidity

I posted a mix of this song a few weeks ago. I just posted a significantly different remix of it. Please check it out and let me know what you think. It's called Stupid Song.

After the initial posting, Pedullist offered to do a bass part and F_cksia offered to do a drum part. They both turned terrific parts IMO. Ped's bass part cuts through very nicely, allowing me to put back much of the guitar I originally had to cut.

F_cksia's drum part is perfect for the song. I thought he captured the spirit of the song very well.

Both of these guys were a lot of fun to work with. I hope they'll want to do something with me again some time. Any butchering of their parts is likely my fault.

I also bought a better compressor, which I think helps out quite a bit. I didn't realize before how crappy my old compressor was. I'm practically learning how to use a real one.

Anyway please let me (or rather us) know what you think.

Where is the snare sitting in the stereo field. Was it just picked up a lot by overheads panned to the side or something? If possible I would seriously consider pulling the drums in general closer to the center. The drums are sitting where the guitars should be IMO.

I still like the "repeating lines" line the best. :)
 
Vocals sound great for this piece! very clever job on the lyrics. I agree the drums are a bit wide. Lotsa fun MMM.

I still love this song! If it didn't take me about two hours to download, I would get this one!

Sounds great over here. The bass is a nice touch and the drumming is perfect for this tune.

Once I had principles, luckily I've lost them all. Sometimes a song needs a different approach.

I haven't even heard this yet...now downloading....but first........breakfast!

No offence, but originally I panned everything in the traditional way, 3M did some wider-stereo-effectprocessing on it. I really like it, but it sounds indeed a little strange when listening it at first.

3M: great mix! I'm now just banging my head on the desk and all for all those terrible timing glitches in my drumpart I hear again..

Pedullist: Were you a punk-bassplayer or something in your previous life? What a GREAT catchy sounds and licks you got there!

Boy, this was fun. All of a sudden dear old Trip has an all-dutch rhythm section. :D

One thing (allrighty, time to bash myself): I played a 16th triplet feel during the choruses (I played along with the 'rhythmically open' drumpattern Trip had programmed), but as it turns out you're playing a straight 16th feel. Makes me wanna do it again, and play it with you as opposed to against you LOL :)
 
SLuiCe - thanks for the listen. Given your music and lyrics I'm still surprised that you would like a frivilous song like this. But I'm glad you do. More on the drums below... I'm tracking a new tune now and I'm using the -12db approach. Boy those wave forms sure look skinny. I'm scared. :D

twist - thanks for the vocal compliments. There's something not right about them though. When I listen on crappy headphones, they don't have quite enough presence. When I listen in the car, they have too much presence (particularly at higher volumes). That doesn't happen with a pro mix. I'd like to know why. Anyway this is the best I've been able to do so far, and I'm glad you liked them.

boydrj - don't give up on downloading man :). I appreciate your thoughts.

F_cksia - yes I butchered your drum part with stereo widening. I thought it sounded cool (it certainly does when it's soloed - but you'll need to take my word on that I guess). But I didn't give much thought as to how it sat in the full mix. It's my first time with real drums, and I learned a lesson. Never fuck with F_cksia's drums. :)

Ped - thanks again for the bass part. It really helped the song. Thanks for doing it over too. For the record, I didn't like his first attempt because I thought it was too "busy" during the guitar riff. Actually, I think Ped agreed and without a fuss, he retracked it (within a day I think). That kind of cooperation is part of what makes a collab work.

My 2 year-old was grooving his naked little but off to it (he just had a bath...BIG BAD MILK incident).

So he's all dancing around, but then I told him it was a home recording, and he immediately left the room in defiant indignance.

He's such a snob, lol.

Nice work guys. You could put what I know about drums and bass in a thimble and still have room enough for whatever a thimble can hold, but I liked it. :D
 
chris "mr. bass-guy" harris. I'm glad you checked this out.

Since you're probably are more attuned to how low frequencies sound than most people are around here, let me ask you... Is the bass sitting ok here in your opinion?

I took a little bit out at the last minute because at loud volumes in the car it was causing the doors to shake. But I could certainly put some back.

Would you roll off the subsonic frequencies more? Would you bring up the bass level? Anything else? This might be more a matter of taste than anything. I'm just asking what you would do if it were your mix.

LOL, I presume he was just dancing to it...and frankly, that's the best compliment in the world. If it makes a 2 year-old kid dance, there must be something good in it. Kudos to you, Trip!
 
very nice collaboration. The tune is all about the lyrics and melody, the additions give good muscle to the vehicle and support it well without distraction. This would be good handclap and singalong inducer in a club.. Smooth playing guys.
Another cronicle in the "HR Sessions".
 
I hate to be a fly in the ointment, but the drums sound shaky to me and the bass sounds a hair out of tune with the guitars.. Maybe it's me.. I don't mean to sound like I'm ripping ya triplage, but I don't remeber noticing these things on the first version.. I still like the tune and it's always fun to collaborate.. I think you have to stop with the stereo spreading gadgetry too.. I think that thins things out too much sometimes.. sorry about the negative vibe trip! :D
 
3M, regarding -12.... Be careful how you read what i was saying about that. It's just a target area. I usally keep my peaks between -12 and -6dB, with the majority on -12. IOW, I track very warm, not hot. If the meat of your audio is sitting at -18, you're probably not going to get the detail you want. If the majority of it is sitting at -6, you're probably not going to get the headroom you need. See? That whole thread just went crazy so i let it go. What I do works for me and I never try to tell someone what is the right way to do things. I've only got less than two years into this (there's that disclaimer again), so what the fuck do I really know.

And I don't see this tune as frivolous at all. To me it's beautifully ironic, and brilliantly written. People think because my shit is so serious I wouldn't like a well written pop tune. I like to have fun too, eh? It's just when I write, I'm usually trying to purge something, or understand something. And the music is always in my head so the thoughts and the music inevitably get together.
Point is, I dig the song and your attitude.

Yes, there are very noticable timing issues. I think the wide stereo image make them even more obvious (see my post up top). I'd say all of your commments were spot on, Sam.

Nevertheless I love the song...makes me smile a lot. :)

i definitely hear some strange things with the drums. the hihat sounds like there is a weird slapback echo going on.

still one of the cleverest songs i've heard though.
