More Sonar XL and Tascam US-428 Questions....

I set up my US-428 and I noticed that these settings are totally basic. Transport is ok, Volume is ok, Pan is ok, Mute and Solo works..........

But, what about the Data Wheel? Doesnt do anything.....

The EQ module on the 428 seems useless in Sonar.

Since Cakewalk didnt have US-428 support at the time of the writting of the CD-ROM/Manual, Tascam did added on the CD-ROM StudioWare panels created by Doctor Dale (longtime Sonar/428 owner).

So, here's my question............

I was thinking about getting rid of the Contol Surface Default settings that Sonar has and loading from the CD-ROM the StudioWare Panels from Doctor Dale.....

What do you think?

Has anyone done this?

Thanks

tcdave

PS - Anyone who would like to talk by phone about this set up, I would like to talk to them.

I'd say do it! I don' think StudioWare will mess up the default settings (or Sonar for that matter).

in Sonar did you go to

options --> control surfaces

select Tascam, and then set up the midi controls?

my data wheel works just fine. in track view it moves the now-time by 1 measure at each click. it probably does more, but that's all i've done with it.

i haven't used the EQ.

Well, I got this email from Customer Support from Tascam and it helped a little but the Default settings for the US-428 in Sonar I think are limited. Here's what Tascam said:

US428 Sonar 2.0 Setup

Within the US428 CONTROL PANEL verify US428 is set to NATIVE MODE
START > CONTROL PANEL > (for some versions of XP, PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE) > SYSTEM > US428

The help from within Sonar is fairly comprehensive. Click on help, choose search, enter "US-428" and under "Working with the Tascam US-428" section it pretty much gives you a play by play on setting it up.

Go to OPTIONS/CONTROL SURFACES and setup the US-428

In the control surface setup screen, you should have the INPUT PORT set as US-428 CONTROL, and the OUTPUT PORT set as US-428 CONTROL PORT as well.

First, make sure that you have all the midi ports enabled under OPTIONS/MIDI DEVICES.

You should have OUTPUT set to US-428 PORT 1, US-428 PORT 2, and INPUT set to US-428 CONTROL PORT selected (blue) for both input and output.

If you don't have all 3 selections in both the input and output columns, there's something else wrong.

Supported functions:
Pressing F1 for help from within the US-428 Property page will bring up a usage page with all the functions documented at the bottom.

Arming tracks:
Press and hold the rec button and tap the appropriate select buttons and the little red box with the R in the corresponding tracks light up.

The LEDs being somewhat sporadic, don't worry too much about it, watch the track view's buttons for your visual feedback. There's an US-428 control surface patch on the Cakewalk site, it makes things work a little better, but it still isn't perfect.

XP Update

The shipping version of Windows XP has a number of bugs that can conspire to make digital audio stutter and glitch. The solution is to first make sure you are running the latest version of the audio drivers for your TASCAM device and then to download and run the Windows XP update listed below.

This update, commonly called the Messenger update, was developed in response to a problem with Microsoft's Messenger application program. Fortunately for those of us who do USB audio, this update fixes XP's nasty habit of making USB audio applications stutter.

One problem that you may run into is that the Messenger update frequently will NOT work on an XP machine that has had Microsoft's Service Pack One installed. In short, you should avoid installing SP1 and you may also wish to avoid doing general Windows updates to XP so you don't interfere with the Windows Messenger Update's proper implementation.

Since the Messenger Update is no longer available from Microsoft except as a part of the larger Service Pack 1, you will find the original file as a zipped attachment to this message.

ok, so you've done everything that I've done. so I don't know why your data wheel isn't functioning.

I had the stuttering audio problem on playback only. when i chose my internal soundcard as my monitor i didn't have any problems.

then I installed XP SP1 and all the stuttering problems during playback to the USB went away.
