More on acoustic treatment

So understanding that professional acoustic treatment panels and traps would be the best way to take care of sonic problems... are there other ways that I could treat a room that are less expensive but still fairly effective?

I know that a trick for recording guitar amps is to put a heavy blanket over the amp and mic setup... would hanging a heavy blanket over a wall help at all?

Big bags of heavy (R-30-ish) insulation stuffed into all the corners is a nice start and ridiculously inexpensive. Not pretty - but effective.
