I did these guys this weekend.
Any thoughts on this one.

Another good one Chris. I liked it alot. The guys voice reminds me a bit of Phil Anselmo, but he sings well when the song gets melodic. Had to turn it up a bit and listen again. Can't give you any real help, as I hear nothing myself that sounds out of place. Instruments sound good, and voice sits well within them. I hear cymbals very cleanly, and drums seem pretty even. Guitars and bass seem to have their own space, and come through very well. And again, the dudes voice is interesting.

For some reason the melodic parts of the song reminds me of Alien Ant Farm...not quite sure why.

I couldn't find a fault, the snare sounds slighly dead and...im not sure how to describe it. But if that's his snare sound then thats cool.

Nice tune also.
 
Hi

I like the work. Nice guitars, bass, vocals and drum. The sound of the snare is surprising for that type of song but it's interesting. Maybe I would try less reverb and more high frequencies on the snare to see how it sounds.

Finster,
sounds pretty good. It reminds me of Chimira or another band along that genre. I didn't care for the more melodic parts, Im not really into this style of metal so take it for what its worth. Nothing jumps out at me mix wise.
 
Hey Chris, good recording work. The overall sonority is low and midrange-y and sounds like it's an arrangement thing with the band. And if it's in the arrangement it's obviously what the band wants to sound like. The drums, bass and gtr tracks on this are very tight. Thinking along the lines of "orchestration" in a non-stereotypic way, I think the recording is lacking only in an instrumental part that adds to the high end, like an additional and brighter gtr line, or even a brighter snare. But that's not your issue.

I was thinking that when i master this ill add some sparkle.
The guits and snare have a good bit of 10k in them so it should jump out nicely when i apply a global eq.

And about the lessen the reverb on the snare comment, there is no reverb in this recording, i believe its the room you are hearing.
There is a tad bit on the vox though.

Nice one Finster. Sounds good man. Will sound wicked after some mastering.
Prob one of the best mixes ive heard you do. Real clear and also quite meaty. Obviously could do with more lo end to beef it up, but thats what masterings for in my eyes.
Yeah the snare is real nice. Reminds me of Deftones. You know what kind of snare it was/skins?

Its the "little squealer" by Porkpie.

But ill tell you.
Ive recorded nemerous bands with that snare.

This drummer is the only one to make it sound that way/good.

Took your advice on the distant gtr mic Ektronic.

Coupled with the close mic, and a little phase correction its the

best rock gtr sound ive gotten yet! Thanks. ;)

I was absolutely blown away when I heard it through my monitors here at home... but how did I manage to only have roughly a minute or so? I thought the whole song was posted?!? :confused:

Oh yeah, Dogman, Purge, and xfinsterx are my idols now... consider yourself added (that and $1 will buy...).

Nice one im glad to be of help. How exactly did you do it? What mic?, how far away?, did you use much of it in the mix?
When i did it i used a RODE NT2 about 2 feet away facing slightly up toward the middle of the 4x12. I nudged it with Pro tools so it was in phase as much as possible with the Sm57 and Sm58. I then made a mix of just the three tracks. I used a little amount of the NT2 and most of the SM57 for meat and some 58 for more high end. I bounced the three tracks to make my life easier but i put a lo cut on the far mic at about 50Hz, but i ended cutting the lo end with the bounced track anyway!
Would you reccomend Pork pie snares; the squealer or was it just that the drummer hit it well that it sounded soo good?
 
Wow...I can't believe how good that song was. Excellent job. The guitar had an interesting "full" quality about it. It actually sounded like you structured their own unique sound rather than just settling for the norm. Loved the bass drum. Also loved the snare suprisingly, cuz I usually don't like snares unless they sound close and huge. And like I said, interesting guitar sound. It all blended together perfectly. I wish I could do that.

I used a royer ribbon 1inch off the grill and directly at the cone.
Then i used a Neumann u87 with the omni setting on at about 4 feet away and facing the top speakers.
Ribbon mic went to a Avalon VT737sp and the Neumann went to a Trident Audio S20 pre. Both mics got rolled off at 120 hz and then i synced up the two waves after tracking. What youre hearing is just that...no eq, no compression....nata. Oh i also cranked the amps LOUD! Tube heads sorta auto compress when you blast em'. I love that!

About the porkpie.
It has a very low threshhold. Meaning even a soft hit sounds pretty damn big.
And big hits? Lets just say youd better leave plenty of headroom when tracking. Its really a great rock snare IMO, and its relativley cheap too. 150.00 US.

Cheers Finster. Nothing a limiter cant fix at tracking with a wild snare drum. but yeah still want to leave plenty headroom so not too much is being limited.
Interesting how you only put a hi pass over the guitars and didnt use any EQ, wicked man. Did you spend quite a while getting the tone from the amp/pedals right first i suppose.
Sounds like some nice equipment you have there. :Jealous:

Yeah 90 percent of the gtr tone comes from me fiddling with the amp and mic placement. The othe big key is the ribbon.
 
What exactly is a ribbon mic? What makes them different from tube mics?
 
I stay away from ribbon mics. From what I've been told, they're extremely expensive and VERY very fragile. However, now I see what all the fuss is about and maybe I will think about getting one. They sound great, seeing as how you used no equalization.
