More inputs from a Saffire Pro 24

Hey all

I've got a Focusrite saffire 24 and I'm trying to record two vocalists, a guitar (acoustic or electric) and a percussion kit (congas, tambourine, a small splash, and some other toys) at once in Logic.

I'm not too familiar with all the tech-y stuff, but I guess if I want more than just the 4 analog inputs, I'll need something like a digital interface or some spdif stuff? :s I'm trying not to add anymore gear to the setup, just because it gets more expensive (and complicated).

One mic for each singer, two mics for the acoustic guitar, and two more for the percussion, right? How would just one mic on all the percussion sound? Terrible?

It depends on the type of music/performance - but you can get very good results from a single stereo pair if everyone has a good handle on the performance and is actually listening to everyone else...

there's a couple of solutions;

firstly, what mics are you using for stuff? one mic on the percussion should sound fine if positioned well, just experiment. an LDC or maybe an SDC in omni should do the job. also, maybe just one mic on the acoustic. that'd get your track count down to four. i'm guessing you've got two external preamps for the extra two in's on the saffire?

if you really want to add more inputs, something like the behringer ADA8000 would be perfect. it'd give you an extra 8 inputs via the optical input on the saffire and it's pretty cheap (£150)
 
I've got a Blue Bluebird, two SM94s and a Neumann KMS 105. I've got a handful of other dynamic mics lying around too (I've got some sennheiser e935 mics).

I don't mind doing the guitar parts on electric, then I can just stick an sm57 on the amp, but as for the rest, I don't have anything omni.

I've looked at the ADA8000 but the less money I spend, the better (for now, at least)
 
with those mics, you could use the bluebird and KMS 105 for the two vocals, one of the SM94's for acoustic guitar and one for percussion and experiment with placement.
 
Only two of the inputs have mic pres and phantom power. You would need two more pres just to be able to record 4 sources, let alone more than 4....
 
Guess I should've mentioned I've got a dmp3 running into inputs 3 and 4

tbf i did ask a couple of comments back but i assumed you had at least some sort of preamp running into 3 and 4 as you don't come across as some sort of schmuck :D
