"Moonshine"-new acoustic song-2nd using ARC2

https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/moonshine

you can download the 16 bit 44.1 khz wav file if you'd like to hear it full bandwidth (download button)

this is the 2nd song i've mixed using the IK Media ARC2 software.
(room correction software, used across the master bus during mixing)

a tale about the hazards of Moonshine consumption.
heheh

not not necessarily autobiographical

Taylor 414 auditorium, Seagull Artist Mosiac, custom USACG Strat, mesa boogie mark2b,
shure KSM44, A Designs Audio MP-1, DBX MC-6 compression,
Sonar 6PE, Wavelab for very mild mastering.

looking for any comments on TRANSLATION thru other playback systems.

I listened on a consumer stereo (Yamaha Receiver, JBL tower speakers, sub woofer). Sounded good, no booming on my system, guitars sounded good, I noticed no drums? If not, then a problem, but I didn't miss them. I thought the vocals (all) could come up a bit more, not too much but could have more presence.

I am not sure if it is the wavelabs, mics or ?? but it sounded really good. (Had a cross between Doobie Brothers and Days of The New feel).

thanks for the report on the playback....
system info and all that, very helpful.

this arrangment of the song calls for no drums, that's the way it was intended.
kinda like an old zeppelin tune, or a folk tune....

the wavelab (mastering program) or mics (they're nice, but not stellar) really don't have a lot to do with the overall sound.
gain staging, mix decisions, and good basic captures make things a lot easier to mix.

thanks again for commenting

My pleasure when I get to hear good music. :listeningmusic:

I can just tell by the songs of yours that I've heard that you're a student of the music of the 1970s :) Always a pleasure.

There's a little bit of a peak on the vocals somewhere in that high-mid range, but I think I've heard that same thing on your other songs too. Just a taste thing, not a bad thing. It's probably just the character of the mic that you're using. Lows and mids sound fine to me, which is actually amazing considering my largely concrete listening environment. It doesn't take much of a peak to make bass frequencies really resonate in my little corner of an unfinished basement.

Listening on my studio computer through a Delta 44 -> Yamaha MG10/2 -> Yamaha HS80M

it sounds very good! my only slight criticism is the vocals sound quite 'excited' if you know what I mean? they are present in the mix but you may have gone slightly too far. I'll have a proper listen on the studio monitors tomorrow which will reveal much more detail I might be talking rubbish, because I'm listening on headphones.

o.k I've listened on the monitors and think it's really good now, nothing really sticks out too much balance wise.

thands for listening, tad...
student, well, i don't know about 'student', but there's a lot of stuff from the 70's that i think has not been improved upon, sure.

peak: high mid range..
i'll investigate that, try to see what it is....
i use different mics.... ADK Hamburg, AT4033, shure sm57, but on this one, it was a Shure KSM44, and i know it does not have any peaky places in that range.

thanks for the list of gear on playback, that helps too!

heh, it's funny how the 2nd listen works sometimes!
heheh, thanks for listening

pinky
cool man, i hear 70's too, but others tell me 80's, and all the while i'm thinking "Hey, it's 2014!"

LOL

It sounds great. Of course it sounded great before you ever got your ARC thingy :-)

It's catchy as hell. Had it stuck in my head for a bit after. I have since cleansed my mind of such foolishness. :D

Not too often I listen all the way to the end. Didn't want it to stop :(

pinky

it IS catchy, isnt' it?!
LOL
it's just so simple, is all.

saads
thanks for digging it

hey thanks for not stopping!

Definitely some Crosby Stills and Nash going on here! Nice clean recording. I like the doubled guitars. I would like to hear more presence in the center guitar. It sounds too alone and unincorporated. I also agree with too much top and frosting on the vocals. I would also crank up and tighten the bass a bit as well as giving it a little bit more top end for definition. I enjoyed this. Nice sound!

thanks for listening.....
and actually, those guitars are quadrupled!
heheh, at least in places..

that CSNY thing, is hard to get away from with this kind of song, they covered so much ground when they were in their prime....
the guitars are panned left and right, none in the center....
they kinda share duties, and leave a good hole in the center for the lead vox and solo guitar to sit during the proper solos...

its funny:
i've had comments that say the vocals need more presence....
and i've had comments that say it's a bit too much.

i guess that goes to show that people's playback systems and personal preferences are all over the map!
heheh....
i like a mellower eq on vox, especially when listening at high volume (i either listen to stuff loud enough to hear everything, or i don't listen at all!)

so i'm inclined to agree with you on vox eq choices......
i already did boost the top end on the bass, so to get more, i'll need to do a tilt shelf and bring the entire bottom down a bit.
i could do that.

thanks for the suggestions

It was my pleasure to listen to your work. That solo guitar in the center is the only real thing that I found that needed work. It sounded almost boxy and confined and wasn't breathing. Do you know what I mean? Stay thirsty, my friend. :)

This sounds awesome man. Truly. It's just so smooth.

I would be curious to hear a version of it with out the room correction plug in for a compare and contrast kind of thing?
