mono or stereo

The stereo inputs cannot be panned. If you go into the left side of a stereo input, it will always be on the left. If you go into a mono input, you can pan it left, right or anywhere in the middle.

If you are using a mic, you need a mic input. If you have a line out from your guitar amp, then use a mono line in, unless your guitar amp happens to have a stereo line out, in which case you should use a stereo line in.

If you are plugging your guitar directly into the mixer, you need to use a high-impedance (hi-z) or instrument input, which I don't think that unit has. So you would need to get a direct box to go between your guitar and mixer.

Generally the stereo channels are used for soundcard returns, effects returns, CD players/tape deck, submixers . . .

So they could not be panned if I go into my Zoom MRS-8? Would it be better to get a more expensive model with mono inputs? Oh and I'm going to be using a 57A Beta mic.

So anyone else have input? Would it be worth it to get a mixer with mono inputs as well?

That mixer has mono inputs, you will be fine with that if you are only doing a couple of mics at a time.

Well I'll probably be only using one. Will I be able to pan tracks at all? Where exactly (which one) should I plug my 57A into? And would there be any point in getting this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/630049/
if I'm only going to be recording myself?
Yes you will be able to pan the tracks. You can plug the mic into any of the xlr inputs (I would pick #1) That other board is much more than you need if you are only recording yourself.

Ok that's good to know you can pan the tracks. On another forum, someone said you can't pan stereo tracks, do they just not know what they're talking about? And is there any downside to getting the littler one? They have the same mic pre's right?

if you're using that as a preamp you should be aware

"# 6 mic XLR inputs"

means it only has 6 inputs for a regular mic cable, the other inputs are gonna need to be 1/4" plugs from another preamp

oops, for some reason i thought this was the thread about needing a mixer for 8 drum mics

You cannot pan stereo tracks. This mixer has 2 mono tracks with xlr inputs, that is why you won't have a problem.
