mono / faux stereo drums

This is a case of wanting my cake and eating it too.

I plan on recording my drums with a mono overhead, purely because I love the way the overhead sounds through my Mono TLA Fatman Channel strip. I tried recording with dual overheads, but not going through the Fatty just didn't cut it for the sound I want for this ep/albumette.

Problem is there isn't really going to be any width on the album. It looks like I'll have to do some old school style instrument panning, we don't like the idea of double tracking the guitar for width, we want to keep the production values fairly simple.

Sooo.......Are there some faux stereo techniques that I can apply to the mono overhead track that are worth using.

I can not justify spending money on another fatman, or much else for that matter.

Any thoughts, ideas etc. would be great.

Cheers

Good-sounding mono is usually far superior than any "faux stereo" effect, IMO... so I wouldn't bother trying to fake it....
