I have a Mbox running windows XP. Right now, I monitor my recordings using Sony headphones but wanted to expand, save my ears, and get some studio monitors. I also have a 16 channel EV mixer and a power amp which are currently getting no use because I am new to this and don't want to complicate things. Not just yet any way. My question is concerning the monitors. Can I get a true flat sound using nonpowered monitors along with my amp or do I just need to pay the bucks and get bi-amped active near monitors. The active monitors sure look nice but functionality along with praticallity are the goal. If I can utilize the equipment I already have and get a comparible sound then that's the way I want to go. Does any one have experience between the two?

I haven't used non-powered monitors but I did get a set of the M-Audio Studiophile SP-5B's. They do a great job for mixing and are currently selling for $200. I think you can get the 8's now for $300. They would complement your M-box nicely.;)

IMHO You really can't get away with not having a set of flat response nearfield monitors, whether active or not, if you want to make home recordings that can sound good on lots of different sound systems. You might want some Event 20/20 passives(or a multitude of others) since you have an amp already.

There is a great thread here that you might benefit from. If you have time, read the whole thing!:)

I like my Tannoy Proto J's as entry level passives, cheap too. Esp in Canada.

Headphones are good, but they can only take you so far...

Thanks!

I believe I'll go with the Event 20/20's or some other passive. Thanks for the help.

I would like to 3rd the motion on the Event products (specifically the 20/20s).

I started off using headphones, and then when I put my music into a real set of speakers, it was not a good thing, and required much time to correct the problems.

But when I got my Events...I thought 'holy sh*t, this is amazing! I just couldn't believe the difference in the recordings. The Events are wonderful.
