Hustle Magic!! We Got It.
Alright..I need to find a good pair of monitors..not really tryin to pay more the $200 for a good pair of active monitors..I know that narrows the list down alot..but I have my set-up in a nice small room so I dont need the big bang high price monitors..

any thoughts..i will look into..
 
I'd say "Good monitors for $200" is an oxymoron... but that's me.

At the very lowest low end of monitoring in Hip-Hop, I'd recommend MAudio BX5 Powered Monitors. You can cop em online for about $240 a pair, and they have a very strong low end.

The bad thing about them, is they don't have a very flat response like monitors should. However, you can learn them pretty easily, and adapt your mixes accordingly.
 
yeah..i know what you mean..im already looking at the BX5's for about 200 or less ..
or the Event 20/20's or the TR5's ..its really all about what sounds good to me for my sounds and mixes..i know its reall hard to specify what really are good monitors..but you can find a decent pair at that price..but you gotta give up something in return..like the low end part..but thats why if you already have a subwoofer..it wont be a problem..

The things is, fam. I wouldn't be caught dead mixing with a subwoofer. That doesn't constitute an accurate response in the low end, even when properly tuned. It's too colored of a response, nowhere near being flat.

If I had a choice between low-end monitors with a decent low end (the BX5's) or low end monitors with no low end, and a sub... I'd choose the former over the later. But that's me speaking as an engineer. :)
 
i respect that..i dont use a subwoofer either...but i have noticed alot of people do here on the forum in general..or they are recommending it when buying monitors that dont give the bass response you want..

The 20/20s are passive. The 20/20bas' are active and probably out of your price range.

I don't really know of other options in that price range. The BX series does always get good reviews though.

I use Event PS6s. I used to feel like I needed a sub, but ended up treating my studio instead and it made a huge difference in the bass response...almost like I got new monitors.
 
so you like the Event PS6..someone recommend those to me on another site..
 
I didn't at first because it seemed like they lacked good bass response. But that was my room, not the monitors. Now, I love them.

I'd be leary on anyone recommending you to use a sub.

Go into any professional studio, and you'll find flat response monitors designed to give you the most untreated, uncolored response as possible. You can achieve the same at your home studio, too. Don't let people fool you into thinking you need a sub. It's not wise.

Me personally, I've been using the Alesis M1 MKII for almost 3 years now, and I love them. I paid $600 for them back in the day. You can get em for under $400 now.
 
cool..i really dont need a sub..i just need some good sounding monitors..im actually finding some folk thats willing to get some decents monitiors down in the price range 200-225 at the most..so we will see..


then i will be done for awhile..until i get back into recording artist again..then i will be lookin for a new mic..
 
My 1st and only monitors are the Behringer Truth 2031a's. Got em for $200. Only complaints I have are they don't relay reverb well and sometimes the low end isn't represented well.
 
i have heard about that..i think right now im lookin at the BX5's or the Wharfield 8.2A
 
i use a sub with my yamaha ns10s they have no bass response so when your mixing you usually overcompensate so its good to have sub that way you know whats going on in the lower frequencies specially since i produce hipohop i also have a pair of maudio bx8a to me if you have really terrible sounding monitors and you make it sound good then it only sounds better on great monitors its really a personal prefrence but if you plan on mixing have something to hear the low freq. 0-80hz
oh yeah the ns10s sound terrible real harsh and no real bass response thats why lots of high end studios have them that way when they mix if it sounds good on those it sounds good evrywhere

yo bknot... I was in the same position as you not too long ago, trying to decide what monitors for around $200. After months of research I ended up going with the new model BX5's, the BX5a. They can be had brand new for $225 at fullcompass.com, with free shipping. I think they are great for the price. It really depends on what your doing though man. If you're mixing beats, then you will NEED a sub, or at least 8" monitors. It's a simple unfortunate fact and there is no escaping it, if you want your bass to be accurate. But, if you are just mixing your vocals over pre-made beats then you will be fine with 5" monitors and no sub, just dont fuck around with the beat ;) .

But yeah, for around $200 get the BX5's or BX5a's.

Not that my mixes are even good.. but... I do try... I'm in the process of researching subs...
 
I have a pair of the old bx5's and I think they are great. I havent had a chance to try to cleanly monitor them because my computer is quite loud and is right next to them, but I am buying a lot of extentions for my computer and going to try to throw it in the other room so I can mix decent. For 225$ you cant go wrong :D
 
Yo Change,

What's your opinion of the KRK Rokit series? I'm thinking of getting the 8's but I'm wondering if I should get the 6's instead. I'm just hoping that the 8's don't add too much bass to color the mix up unnecessarily.

Surprisingly, I don't use monitors at all. I mix through a pair of headphones that I've experimented with and learned really well so I know where they're dead on accurate and where they're dead wrong for the most part. All my speakers are with subs and I don't do mixing with subs.
